|
|
Hello All, I need your help on this one!
I found a spot under the brass keel guard today while I went to check out the boat at the storage lot today. (See last 2 photos in my album today)
When I probed the area with an ice pick it was hard as a rock but the discolored area was definitely below the surrounding gelcoat approx. .025-.030"
The Brass keel guard was not damaged and appeared to be bedded in 5200 or
something similar. No gaps were present between the keel guard and the
area in question. Any Ideas out there?
Thanks!
Mike

Someone with more knowledge about boat building can explain better, but I believe that spot is part of the process used to pop the hull out of the mold. Not a problem although they sure did a poor job of cosmetic work. The spot is there on all hulls but usually they cover it with well blended gelcoat. No worries as long as you don't look at it. _________________ TyBoo Mike

Tyboo Mike,
Thanks for your info!. Now that I think about it, the fact that the area in question appears to be perfectly circular and symmetrical with the keel guard makes sense
as the most probable reason. If I had not looked under the boat, I would not have
seen it. (Out of sight, Out of Mind)
Thanks,
Mike |

I bought a 16' cruiser last summer and I have the same circle on my hull,I would think that it is part of the moulding process.

I can't wait to tell my wife that we own a Naval Vessel!

There is no reason that such a defect should appear (agree that it is primarily cosmetic. It is possible that C Dory has used water pressure to pop the hulls out of the mold (a common practice) , and this is where the water fitting is in the mold. _________________ Bob Austin

If I recall correctly, that circle is where there was a steel plunger in the mold.
That plunger was used to 'pop' the hull out of the mold. They may also have used water pressure to assist the removal.
Seems to me that there was a thread here about this. _________________ Larry H

Dave - when are you going to tie up to the USS Abraham Lincoln? I'd like to be there to photograph the attempt.
