I keep my 22 Cruiser in dry storage. I would like to know if my batteries will freeze. We have had several days of below 32 temps. The boat is in a boatel. |

To quote from Trojan:
"Can a battery freeze?
The only way that a battery can freeze is if it is left in a state of partial or complete discharged. As the state of charge in a battery decreases, the electrolyte becomes more like water and the freezing temperature increases. The freezing temperature of the electrolyte in a fully charged battery is -92.0oF. At a 40% state of charge, electrolyte will freeze if the temperature reaches approximately 16.0oF."

Visit the boatel every 4-6 weeks and throw a half hour charge on the battery set... You should lay eyes on the boat periodically, anyway

I can vouch for the visits. Visited the Captain's Cat on the lift yesterday and found the port bilge pump running (dry). I had antifreeze in the bilge. Had to pull the fuse to get it to quit, will investigate in warmer weather. My batteries stay on the built in charger when on the lift, no problems so far.

Well Charlie, you need to dig out your monkey arms and remove the pump from the housing to test the float switch. It's really easy to test once you snap it out of the housing. Maybe you got something stuck in there or it just needs to be replaced.
Good luck with that.
In terms of batteries, I find I get longer life out of them if I keep them somewhat warm during the winter. I refill with distilled water, charge them up, then store them in our heated basement. _________________ Captain Matt
