Hi Folks
Detailing my boat to show it has gone well. Used the links John AKA
Swee Pea provided for cleaning the Sunbrella. Worked well except for a couple of rust and blood stains. Any suggestions for attacking these w/o dissolving the fabric? There is also a crescent wrench shaped rust stain on the floor of the cockpit. Tried Oxi 5 but it didn't work - any ideas.

For stains on everything except fabric, nothing beats ON&OFF made by MARY KATE, available at marine supply. It's acid, eats rust stains and waterline discoloration, do not use on aluminum.

On your hard, fiberglass surfaces, like your floor, the consensus of Brats seems to be Barkeepers Friend. I am sure it will work. I had never heard of this product before until the Brats talked about it on this site. You can find it at the local grocery store. It is great stuff. http://www.barkeepersfriend.com/ I went to this link and if you navigate to the "Stain Removal" link in the left column, there will be some suggestions on blood stains on fabrics. Might work for your.

If the Barkeeper's Friend, which is oxalic acid, plus detergents and abrasives, doesn't work, try Naval Jelly, which is basically phosphoric acid in a gel solution. It will attack the rust stains, too.
Make sure you try it some place inconspicuous first to test that it doesn't harm the paint or fiberglass.
Hope It Eats Your Rust Out!

phosphoric acid is the answer. I've used it on my boats for years to remove the stains from dirty water and rust stains. Just spray some on and lets it sit for five min and wash it off. Stain gone. The expensive version is Ospho(sp). I can get a whole gal from a local guy $9. I've seen it at home Depot also. I've also used Muratic acid but it doesn't work as good for me. _________________ 2007 22 Cruiser

Goop! A hand cleaner for mechanics is really good for removing blood stains on clothing. I haven't tried it on Sunbrella, but it takes fish blood out of clothing quite well, also sportwash (the type bowhunters use) removes blood stains quite well and neither product has caused me problems with color bleeding. Still, if you try them out, spot check in an inconspicuous area, let the products work their way into the fabric and use some terry cloth soaked in cold water to try and work out the stain. Good Luck! _________________ Lenny |

So Hank.... after that trip to the Bahamas, you are detailing to show your boat....? Selling it? What is next? Surely a man who would take his 23 foot boat both ways to the islands.....has enough salt in his veins as to just be changing vessels? That looks like one neat trip...although... waiting a few days for some better crossing winds may have made it a bit smoother. We have used some of the same anchorages. Cool.

The Sunbrella cleaning chart is at:
http://www.sunbrella.com/na/stain_chart.php
For blood, the Dawn and Ammonia as above is recommended.
For rust, there is a product: Carbona Stain Devil #9 which is recommended.
I would strongly suggest that you follow the Sunbrella suggestions, even though I use oxylic, phosphoric Acid, and BarKeeper's Friend for other applications. _________________ Bob Austin
