Remounting radar display unit

The P.O. on my boat mounted the display module for the radar suspended from the underside of the electronics shelf. That's too far above the helsman's line of sight for me. I want to move it so that it will be mounted upright on the dash area over the entryway to the v-berth, between the compass and the starboard side of that surface. I tested it there and didn't see any interference with the compass or the radar display.

So - Any tips on whether to mount the unit with bolts that go through the surface and secure it with nuts from the v-berth side? Or mount it using wood type screws that don't fully penetrate the surface. How thick is that surface and - Is that area of the dash cored?

I have my displays mounted with RAM brackets and they work well.

Do the RAM mounts need to be attached with screws too? Or does your setup use suction cups?

Don't know if this will work for you but I started a while back mounting things with industrial sticky back velcro if I wasn't sure if I'd like the location. The stuff holds so good in some cases it became permenant mounting hardware. I even mounted my helm seat with it plus compass, rear view mirror, cup holders, paper towel rack etc and no holes in my glass. I bought the stuff at Lowes in a big roll.

I will look into the industrial velcro. Sounds very promising. Still interested in knowing about fixed mounting, though, before going ahead.

You don't mention what size your unit is, but the PO of my boat mounted the Garmin 4210 on the "dash" directly in front of the helm using thru bolts. I feel it interferes to much with my forward vision ( probably only perceived ) and as soon as I get home it will go in the fwd corner stbd side above the windows.

The 22 has a different dash configuration than the Tom Cat -- I may move the C-80 on my 22.

I know suction cups and velcro are tempting, but I would never trust them for such an expensive unit. Also, bashing through seas/bad weather would be a bad time for the unit to fall on the floor, which is when it is most likely to happen with anything other than a solid mount Shocked

I too fix mounted my 10" Furuno display eye level with helm gauges, to the left of the helm. (You can see pics in my photo album).

There are a lot of creative installs done by C-Brat's though, scan through the albums to see what idea you like best.

Matt, according to SeaSucker, their product is much more than a suction cup and can hold 200#+ -- read their FAQ for more details. You have a visual display that lets you know vacuum needs to be pumped up, etc. It might be useful for testing different locations before settling on a permanent one. I would probably not use it for a permanent mount, though, if only because it makes no sense to tie up the cost of a SeaSucker in a permanent installation.

Great to have all these responses. If I go with a fixed mount, that brings me back to the original question regarding the dash/shelf area directly over the v-berth entrance on a CD-25:

I was skeptical of using a RAM mount for something as heavy as a C80, but I just got back from my favorite toy store (Fisherman's Marine) and saw a C80 mounted vertically on the large diameter RAM. It was very secure and steady. That was a bit of a surprise.
