..... besides a C Dory? I have a 4WD, 8 cyl 92 Chev pickup and a 2001 PT Cruiser. Been thinking of trading the Cruiser for a Subaru Outback.

Could I pull a 16' ..... a 19' ..... a 22' with either the old pickup or the Outback? Am not looking to go cross country on a regular basis but also not looking to buy a $40K pickup to haul the boat.

Advice appreciated/

I pulled a 22' with an 89 Chevy 2WD small V-8 with no trouble at all. I upgraded to a 92 Ford large V-8, not because of engine size but it was a good deal at a good price from a trusted seller and the Chevy had over 130K miles. I also pull the 22 with a 2004 Chevy trailblazer 6cyl with no trouble at all. There has been quite a bit of discussion on this site about the "ideal" tow vehicle and there is no single answer. People have pulled 22's with everything from a 4cyl pickup to an F350; it depends on the terrain you will be traversing routinely and the condition of the vehicle more than the engine size alone or the age of the vehicle. If you will be doing a lot of mountain travel then i would consider a bigger tow vehicle but other than that, .....

towing with the outback thats a 4 whl drive (all wheel) vehicle that has a 2700lb tow rating the 16 would be no problem the 19 weighs in at about 3000lb with trailer and engine ,so maybe your truck could pull that .The 22 usually weighs in about 3500lb-5000 lb depending on full fuel water and gear .

We towed our cd-22 about 3800lb towing down the road with our Honda Pilot Your truck should have no problem you might want to put on a auto tranny cooler and some helper springs in the back .I'm sure there will be others to chime in . Do a search in towing we have discussed this many times Good luck in your quest

I suspect that in the long run you will be happier with the 22. The truck should do well with that. I recently towed my 25 with a 1993 Dodge 3500 which has a Road Trek conversion. The CD 25 weight is about 7500 lbs--slightly over the rated capacity of the truck--but it was a very short distance. I also towed a 22 with that truck and a Honda pilot. (as well as a 30 foot RV). My C Dory 22 was over 4000 lbs loaded and on the trailer.

Thanks everybody for your input. I will search the forums some more as was suggested. Perhaps I need to wash the old farm truck and plan on keeping it as a tow vehicle as it sounds like that is the best horse I have in my stable.

The Outback will pull the 16 OK, but the question really is, Will the 16 be the boat you want? If so, Great. If not then the 19 and the 22 are going to be too big for that Suby and you are looking at the Pickup. Good luck in all those decessions.
