2006 Suzki 150 four stroke. Zero hours. Is there a break-in period? I know from building air cooled VW's that any new engine has a break in period; to set the lifters/cam and seat the rings etc. Any thing like that needed on new outboards? If so, how, what....?
Again...no manual. _________________ "We can go over there...behind the 'little one'....."

Mark,
I know that Honda has manuals on the web, and I have seen some years manuals for Suzuki. I suggest a little sleuthing to see if you can get one for your year/model/serial number.

Mark here is what my DF 140 manual says
Break in period 10 hours
Break in procedure
1. For the initial 2 hours:
Allow sufficient idling time ( about 5 minutes) for the engine to warm up after cold engine starting. After warming up , run the engine at idling speed or the lowest in gear speed for 15 minutes. During the remaining 1 hour and 45 minutes operate the in engine in gear at 1/2 throttle (3000 rpm)
2. For the next 1 hour: operate the in engine in gear at 4000 rpm, or at three quarters throttle, avoid running the engine at full throttle.
3. Remaining 7 hours: operate the engine in gear at desired engine speed. You may occasionally use full throttle, however do not operate the engine continuously at full throttle for more than 5 minutes at any time.
then in bold it says
note for the remaining 7 hours of break-in operation, you may use full throttle, however do not operate the engine continuously at full throttle for more than 5 minutes at a time or severe engine damage such as seizure may result
Best

You can buy an owners manual and the service manual for your DF 150 from Brownspoint www.brownspoint.com. They seem to be a nice source for Suzuki parts

You should receive a manual with your outboard as well as an orientation . Every motor comes with one. BTW we have never see a seizure of a 4 stroke motor . The break in is the same for the 140 as the 150 as it is for all 4 stroke Suzukis . Oh, and when the oil light starts flashing , dont panic. It is just indicating you have reached 20 hours . That's time for the initial service . You can finish your day of boating . I cant tell you how many calls I have gotten from panic stricken new owners that didnt read the manual and didnt hear us tell them that would occur . Lots to absorb when taking delivery of a new boat . Enjoy!

Great Marc. Thanks to Eric and you I now have what I need. I KNEW there had to be some break-in procedure. Matt tried to find me an owner's manual, but said they didn't have one. Since the boat was a repo from another dealer there were a few hiccups, but nothing that can't be overcome thanks to all of you, the "inter-webby" and a little searching. I located a service manual and will order it today.
The info on the light is good to know. I would probably have freeked out too without knowing, but if I had a manual I would of at least skimmed/read through it BEFORE doing anything. It's amazing how many boaters don't do any research or education PRIOR to going out. Just buy a boat and go.
Mahalo again. |
