My son is now the 6th generation Washingtonian. We date back to pre-1900 in the La Conner area, mostly fishermen (by profession, not recreational). Great great grandpa Andrew would have a fit if he saw what tourism has done to Skagit county!
I can't stand what 50 years of "progress" has done to the San Juans.... |

Susan, et al:
I'm detecting a trend here. Not just in this thread, but on many. Seems like all the Washingtonians like to pride themselves in their local roots and decry the "progress" of the changes of the past half a century and the influx of "foreigners", especially those from California! I'm
sure it makes them feel good to be part of an "elite" pioneer group as well.
Interesting position taken, with a lot of nostalga for the old days. Not unlike that found in many other places, such as Oregon, except that there are so many Californians in Oregon the natives may well be outnumbered!
I imagine "progress" has changed most all of the world, not just Washington or the rest of the Pacific Northwest. You'd probably have to move into the primitive interior of Alaska or Canada to really find some place without "progress" that hasn't also brought it's downside.
The negative nature of "Progress" is probably just the modern nature of life itself, except for the impact of number of people themselves. Television and other forms of modern technology have probably done as much or more to change your lifestyles, except for the impact of the sheer number of people.
I'm sure the immigrants are flocking to your part of the woods in part to excape that same "progress" that has gone even further where they're coming from. Must be a modern version of the "Frontier Movement" wherein the more rural areas become a place to escape to after retirement as opposed to a place to find your fortune in your youth.
Given the choice, I doubt all third generation and older would really choose to send all the immigrants back "home" to where they came from if it involved also sending back all the money, jobs, commerce, and industry that has come with them. Too bad you can't sen 'em all home and keep the $$$!
All funny business and spoofing aside, we're all Americans in a much smaller, larger, and more integrated and complex world. No wonder we long for the good old (simple) days! Have a good one! Joe. (Still in California) _________________ Sea Wolf, C-Brat #31

Joe,
Very well stated. Of course it isn't just Californians that are making our pristine little area look like an LA suburbian ranch home project. Our lovely piece of the US has always been special to me and my family, here since late 1800's. We can't blame folks for wanting to live in paradise, but we can't be blamed for missing the old days when we didn't have locks on doors or neighbors close aboard on either side, in front, and in back. It's still a great place to live, and I'm not moving by choice.
Just wish the fish would bite more often!

You can stop worrying. Migration is FROM the northern states, such as Washington and Oregon TO the sun belt states such as Nevada, Arizona, Florida. _________________ Bill & Evelyn Macdonald

So we are losing population? Sez who? It sure doesn't seem that way...I want to live half the time at Birch Bay, WA, half the time in Tucson, AZ and half the time on a 34' American Tug - but then my math never was too good...

You could start by looking at the US Census Bureau statistics. |

Jeez, I wish all the non Californians would just get over the fact the California is such a great place to be from. I'm sure the Beach Boys would have sang "I wish they all could be Washington Girls" if it had made any sense. And yes, I am sooooo sorry that Arnold never wanted to be Govenator of Washington State, of course I'm not sure why the current two top candidates want to be Govenor up here either except that they enjoy bashing each other so much!
I understand how difficult it must be to have several thousand people from that sunny and happy go lucky place want to move up to cold, rainy and down right WET Washington! How would I know you ask? Because TENS of thousands of cold and wet Washingtonians have moved to California and refuse to return home! If you could just get all of the dang people that have moved to California from other states to leave, those of us in Washington would have soooo much more breathing room down there that we'd all GO BACK HOME!
You know how embarrassing it is to admit to your buddies back home that you have a HEATER in your boat? They still can't get over this whole moss thing, they think I'm growing some new sort of weed up here and want details. Of course the coffee addiction that I've aquired really cracks them up, heck if they need a little boost in the middle of the day they just hop on the freeway and dodge a few bullets and their pumped for the next ten days. If you don't have a bullet hole or two in your door down there you're a whimp! Where do you think all these fake bullet hole stickers came from? You get the stickers from the local "Welcome Wagon" lady when you move to California until you've earned a few real ones!
Sorry that we've turned this pretty little place into suburbian ranch home projects, but you see, California has been turned into just plain wall to wall projects by all the people moving there and you can only cram so many people into one area of the country before some of them get squeezed back out. Of course there is one bright side to this, at least there is still some "suburbian" left up here! To bad so many of us Californians brought our Dodges with us, but hey, old habits die hard. When somebody shoots your Ford, it just up and dies and of course shooting a Chevy is like hunting a mouse with a shotgun, aint much left afterwards. |

WOW,
all I was tryin to do was show how the San Juan Islands are such a neat place to boat. but alas, the art of blowing something out of proportion has shown its ugly head ....lol...
and amazingly not one mention of the article in any of the replys. did any of you take the time to go to it and read it
We country folk up here in the serene Pacific NW just get tired of the CITIOTS moving out here, bringing their city mentality, to the country, and tryin to change what was a perfect place |

It'll be OK, Roger. Unless, that is, Larry and Brock get to discussing it!
Me, I'm kinda neutral. I used to be bothered by all the traffic heading north through Oregon, but the last Californians who bought property in Washington stopped by to vist us on the way up. They were pretty nice people, so now it doesn't trouble me so.
Damn, where's Tom McCall when you need him?? _________________ TyBoo Mike

We California Natives who hunted in serene areas before cities of 150,000+ covered them up, agree. Citiots move to the country to "get away", they begin to miss the amenities they had and eventually it's no longer "Country." On the other hand, BANANA folk (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything) are the other extreme. What has me chuckling is that the major percentage of those "banana" types are imports....
Hey, I don't allow bananas on my boat and never take them fishing. That's bad luck.
