Naw, the Honda guys don't have to speak up. Their motors' reputation says enough. There's a reason they cost more. I have Honda motors on my boat, my small lawnmower, my small rototiller, my generator, and my pressure washer. Quite frankly, I cannot understand why anyone would buy a small four stroke that wasn't a Honda. They work that good.
If I recall, one of the main plusses in RF's mind for the Yamaha was the timing chain rather than Honda's belt. I am from the other school and think that the belt is superior. I would much rather have a dry belt that I can easily check and replace than a metal chain zinging around metal sprockets - horizontally, no less - grinding itself away in my oil. But that's just me.
But as everyone says, you can't really go wrong with either choice, and I agree that service availability should be a big factor in the decision. But then, my Hondas have never needed service beyond the minor routine stuff I can do myself with parts bought online.

Preliminary survey results thus far:
Yamaha 10
Honda 1
Suzuki 1
Question was between choosing Honda and Yamaha 4-strokes.
Evinrude e-tech, Mercury, Nissan (Tohatsu), Force (Chrysler), Faegol, Scott-Atwater, McCollouch, Homelite, Eska, SeaGull, Johnson, Sea King, Ted Williams, West Bend, Briggs and Stratton, Clinton, Champion, and others I can't remember right now were not on the ballot this time.) Some of these names bring back some interesting memories!

Ford or Chevy? Cummins or Duramax? Honda or Yamaha? I think I can shed some light here...
Buy a boat. Put a motor (or motors) on it. Go use it. If you have a dealer close by who services either, that may be a factor... but mainly: go use the boat.
Marty is a most wise man... burger-eating, cheek of tan... he bought the boat, he shows the smile... motor chugging, mile by mile... heed his words, his sage advice...he knows the joy, the water's nice... motor matters, not the make... enjoy the boat for goodness sake... blessings on this kindly man... boating guy with cheek of tan... judge him not for his motor... know the joy, to be a boater.

One thing to consider is the charging abilities of both engines. I don't know what kind of electrical load you will have on the boat but the Honda has a 45 amp alternator compared to Yamahas 25 amp alternator. On long cruises or even short ones the Hondas larger alternator will save you some generator time.

Hello,
Being a fan of Honda cars, small industrial engines, welders and generators I have to say Honda for the alternator charging and they had a pretty decent financing deal of less than seven percent on the whole enchilada (boat motor and trailer if it was Honda powered. I've owned both two stroke and four stroke Yamaha they are good motors also. In Mexico I don't believe I ever saw anything else besides Yamaha. Make sure the Honda you are buying is the new EFI (electronic fuel injection) model not the older carbureted one. What your local dealer can service is a plus for whatever you chose. Buy the boat! Damn the torpedos!

I just started with the first response to the question at the top of this thread and then counted the recommendations up through the post just before mine which hadn't bee posted when I was writing it.
Do it yourself with a "Y" column an "H" column, and a gate tally. I had to add in the one Suzuki because someone suggested it also.
The results amazed me just as much as anybody else!
Was fun thinking back and remembering all the old brands that we've had to deal with in the past.
Jack in Alaska, in an email, added in a "Martin Outboard' and an "Archimedes-Penta Outboard", neither of which I've had the pleasure knowing or of giving a 1000 pulls to start each time, just like all the rest of the old eggbeaters.
I'm wondering if the Archimedes-Penta was a early Volvo product, or if it goes all the way back to Ancient Greece and Archimedes, the discoverer of the Principle of Flotation himself, who is reported to have run screaming down the street after jumping out of his bathtub, yelling "Eureka" ("I Found It") for all to hear when he discovered that a boat displaces it's exact weight in water as it floats according to Mother Nature's Laws of Buoyancy.
Somehow I think the visual image he presented of his naked self was so overwhelming that the scientific discovery was largely overlooked at the time. Maybe the most important derivation from this story, however, is the classification of men as "outboards" and women as "inboards" sometimes seen on yacht club bathroom doors.

| I am rigging my next CD 25 with a Yamaha and a Honda at the stern, and Suzuki kicker just in case they both fail....I'm not taking any chances. I have a better idea: let's vote for the worst outboard ever made. My vote is for FORCE....happy motorboating fellas:) |

Sorry, but my vote would be for Chrysler (who's design was used for the Force motors until Mercury started using their own design when the motors proved unreliable.)

I"ve had yamaha's best controls of all I've had 3 115'shp 2 were f-115 the other a 2 stroke
Suzuki best torgue bigger prop and gearset 90hp 4 stroke
Mercury almost the same as Yamaha the old 4 strokes not the new Verado's I've had the old 2 stroke 175 terrible fuel economy
Johnson lots of problems with a 4 cylinder 90 hp could never get it to run properly .
Of all the engines Suzuki the best motor Yamaha best controls my 2cents worth

I concur with Force and Chrysler as the WORST outboards. I still like the Yamaha main motor. I like my son's 1995 Honda Civic, but my wife's Nissan 2007 Altima much better (32 mpg on hwy and lots better horsepower and acceleration than her earlier 2001 Altima -- both 4 cylinders ) . My Cummins Diesel in Dodge 2500 pickup is the finest motor I've ever owned in a vehicle. It is nearly as good as my Johnson 80s vintage 2-stroke 7.5 horse kicker, my Stihl "Farm Boss" chain saw, but still not quite my Browning Belgian made 12 gauge Lightweight Auto - 5 or my Ruger .22 Single Six stainless revolver.
