I am going to take Constant Craving and Salty the boat dog over to Lake Owyhee in early May. I'm planning on being there starting the weekend of May 10, and spending a week or so exploring the country. If anyone is interested, feel free to join in. There is a resort, and fuel available at the north end of the reservoir, a couple of state parks, and some fantastic scenery. leslie Gulch and Succor Creek have phenomenal geology. The reservoir itself is about 50+ miles long, so it should make for some interesting cruising. Warm water fish like crappie, small mouth bass and catfish should be plentiful. For the flyfishers in the crowd, the river below the dam has a very productive brown trout fishery that is catch and release.
I expect that a few non-dory family and friends will be along, but maybe we can convince them that Alumaweld and Arimas need to be exchanged for CDorys.
Regards,
Steve |

That may be about the time we come into Lake Owyhee from our raft trip from Rome. If you see an 18 foot red SOTAR raft give us a wave. Check out the hot springs at Red Rock Basin south of Leslie Gulch. The cabin at Pelican Point Air Strip is fun to see too. It was built by the small plane pilots that live in that area. The BLM just printed a great map "Malheur River County" that does a nice job.
See you there -Maybe, Hank |

I found some very nice photos on the web by a very talented photographer from Louisiana. David Chauvin's gallery on Pbase can be reached by clicking on his name. Here are a couple of his photos. I left some as thumbnails so you would want to go out to his gallery and see the originals... My Thanks to David for permission to use his work.

Wandering Sagebrush,
Just wandering, how is that road into the lake?
Looking at the online map there is 15 miles or so of dirt road?
Washboard?

I wish we where able to go, that's a cool spot. The road in is a fairly well maintained gravel road with some sharp twisties with an occasional steep grade thrown in...and don't forget the tight little tunnel carved out of the rock. The road is no problem, if you had a big motorhome pulling a tomcat it may cause an increase in blood pressure.
The water level flucuates something fierce on the east side, it's always good to check before tromping over there....it's looking good at 57% full now according to the link below.
That rafting trip would sure be fun, that's some rugged, remote country, be safe & take alot of pictures

we have a few Owhyee pics in the B~c album _________________ Ken

JT,
This will be a first trip for me, so I don't have much personal insight into the primitive roads on the east side. I have roamed most of Oregon, but for some reason have never made it to Owyhee. I do know that it is spectacular.
From all that I have gathered, the roads are fairly rough, and not something that you want to pull a boat along. I am going to launch at the resort and then travel down the reservoir via CDory. I will also probably take the land vehicle on some day trips down to Leslie Gulch, Succor Creek and maybe the Catacombs (that road permitting).
This is going to be a bit of a heuristic adventure... |

I am not sure if anyone is going to sign up for the Owyhee trip, although JT, Hank and possibly CW have mentioned that they might be in the area. Regardless, here comes the true confessions part... When I threw the date dart at the calendar, I did not realize that the weekend of the 10th was Mother's Day weekend. Yours truly is going to start a few days later than originally planned so that he can stay home and honor the bride. I will probably leave Canby on Monday, May 12.

The last of the folks who were planning on going to Owyhee have changed their plans, so i am officially calling this one done.
I guess a trip to Malheur and the Steens with my birdoculars is in order.
