Hi Brats,

Here in northern Ohio we are getting hammered by another snowstorm. I just measured 16 inches of fresh snow on our deck. There was none here yesterday morning, winds to 40 are forecast for this afternoon and a storm warning exists until sometime tomorrow, depending on who is reporting it. This is a regular, ol' when-I-was-a-kid storm.

The really strange thing was the lightning and thunder that what woke me up at 4 AM, something which I experienced once before in a snowstorm about thirty-five years ago. Man, just saying that makes me feel chronologically-gifted.

Also, ODOT is out of salt in many parts of the state and they have resorted to buying 80 pound bags on the commercial market, which has made it impossible for us to buy any. In our small town they are just salting the hills and I heard on the news that Cincinnati is out of salt and using sand. I'm sure that Pat Campbell will fill us in on that.

We were hoping to ride out the storm at our cabin (pics in album), but some counties had official road closures and we couldn't get there. Both our sleds and x-c skis are at the cabin so that is out as a diversion. I did split a cord of oak last week so we have plenty of firewood for the fireplace.

We'll probably settle back with some Old Leghumper, a local (I think) robust porter, although not nearly as good as the beer that Pat brought to the SBS last year. I was hoping to have him ship me a few cases, but he can't do that. Would this qualify as disaster relief? I like a good, dark, creamy beer that should qualify as a food group and Old Leghumper comes close.

So it looks like shortly we'll take the Airedales for a run in the woods (55 acres behind our home) and come back, sit in front of the fire and just enjoy the storm. Of course, ol' Tropical Tip Jim will probably chime in with a weather forecast of 70's, sunny and a good chance of dolphins in the afternoon!

Oh yeah, I did think of firing up the Wallas and spending some time relaxing aboard, but using a snow shovel to get aboard a boat just doesn't seem right.

Good Morning Nick,

Your weather news ought to make Al/Moose feel fortunate he doesn't live in Ohio. For most of the year we have shared the same weather patterns but this one missed us entirely which is just fine for me. There must have been a reason this Buckeye front did not want to cross over state lines into Wolverine country. The one good thing is that the snow won't last long. Probably just long enough to finish two or three bottles of Old Leghumper. We had over a foot of snow, the result of two separate storms, in the last week and most of it gone now.

Having been hammered by storms throughout the winter, we share your pain. We are 5 degrees this morning but no snow and 50s predicted by Wednesday. As we get closer to really using our boat, the subject of good dark brews is very important. I'm always interested in good local beers, etc., and never pass on local/regional porters. St. Pauli dark has been one of my defaults since college, and a cold Guinness is hard to beat. But the local stuff is fun. I remember unexpectedly having a good porter as we were cutting inland from the Point Arena area to 101. All of a sudden there was a little town -- Boonville, I think -- with a very nice brew pub. It doesn't matter whether their nice or dives, though.

Shouldn't C-Brats share their local info on brews and pubs? We hope to be many places east, west, and in between over the next few years and would sure hate to miss good stuff. Somewhat related, I, for one, would enjoy info on the great local dives -- especially the ones that can be accessed by boat.

Jim,

Actually, I could use some of your non-snow photos right now. Say something along the line of sunrises, sunsets, dolphins or spring break? Keep both the photos and weather reports coming! They do brighten my day and are appreciated. In fact, I often get on Accuweather to check out the weather in the Keys and so on. I frequently show your photos and posts to Marcia to try to get her to move up her retirement date. She just hired another veterinary internist so hopefully we will have more hit-the-road boat time this year.

I'm one of those guys who thinks snow is neat. It never snows where I live though. It can snow all around, higher and lower, but it won't snow at my house enough to amount to anything. Never has, never will. Don't want snow, Nick? All I have to do is move there.

Well, our daughter just returned to Chicago on Friday, after spending a week in Olympia (sister,) and a week in San Diego (us,) with her kids. We went to the desert for a couple of days and spent a day down by the beach. Here, the weather was in the 70s-80s and balmy. We can only hope that this storm will encourage her to move back here to SoCal.

We love the snow at our place in Maine too. Quiet, no tourists, wood fires, etc. Gets a little tedious after a month or two with the snowblower but nice nevertheless.

Unfortunately, it's FOR SALE right now, we haven't been up there in about 15 months and the kids think it's too far away (950 miles for us Rolling Eyes

) It'll be rented this summer for the first time, until it sells! Anyone wanna buy a house? It's the first listing on the web page, with 11.6 Acres...

Nice spot Charlie. We know how you feel as we have a similar plot (undeveloped) a bit further East and for us it is 4000 miles + which is a bit too far for a weekend.
Shovellng snow used to be fun. Not any more.

Just so you won't feel so bad, here is a photo that I took right behind my house when I was cross country skiing; probably on the day you were enjoying 70 F weather. This is what my favorite swimming/fishing hole looks like in the winter.

Yes interesting weather here too of late. Each day you do not know to bring out your T-Shirts and sun screan, or colder weather gear.... but, after driving home from Nashville last night at 30 mph as to be able to see thru the blowing snow....we ended up about 3" deep here in Clarksville.

Then, about 8am...I get the call from Brother Mike, B, and their daughter Brandy out on the Cumberland loving their newly installed wallas cooktop/heater and the snow.

I can not go out and play due to having "mandatory fun" with Sherryl's job. We drive back to Nashville for the final night of the OVC basketball conference games. We won last night and it was a fun time. Tonight should be a blast too...but...I will be distracted a bit... We also have tickets for the Grand Ole' Opry tonight.... You see...my ol friend from Mt. Juliet and his band are going to be there tonight.... The Charlie Daniels Band...and who ever else shows up... That will be fun too. Having flash backs to one of our C-Brat gatherins when about a dozen of us took in the Opry one night during our cruise/gathering.

Preping to go up into the NE corner for the Portland Maine Boat Builders Show next week. First time at that show and should be a blast...and no "clorox" boats...

Spring is near!!!

Jonesboro, (Smith Point) staring out at Roque Bluffs and yep, the phone book for the whole county is about 1/4 inch thick. Love it but can't stand the climate most of the time.
Which means we could be East or West of you actually. Quite a coincidence. We nearly have the same view.
