Are there any C-Dory 22s or TomCat 24s on the Hudson River or in Connecticut?

I was going to see a used 22 for sale in Saratoga Springs when I'm in New York next week, but it appears to have been sold.

I'm still driving down the Hudson to Riverside, Connecticut, to see a Cape Dory 24 Trawler, so I'm looking for a C-Brat in those parts who would be willing to show me his 22 or 24 and, thus, have me forever as a debtor.

Howdy Georgs, and welcome to the Pub!

You might try clicking on the "Our C-Dorys" link at the top of every page - this will bring up a list of members, and you can see who has what, and where they are located - assuming they've chosen to share their location. There are two pages - make sure and check them both out.

From there, you can click the PM or Email button to contact them.

Good luck in your quest - it's still a little easier out on the west coast to get a demo ride, but things have definitely been picking up for you east coasters in the last couple years.

Georgs, I second Bill's welcome. Thought I'd save you some time too.

The following are in your area (no 24's listed but then all users don't list the boat they have)

ron6950 in Albany has a 16
CTYankee in CT (no city listed) has a 22
Champ in Lake Champlain and Hudson has a 16
C dory 26 is in South Hero Vt on Lake Champlain, no boat listed
russoboat in Southhampton NY has a 16
John Rawson in Thousand Islands has a 16

Those are the only obvious ones to me, the name is the username, you can look em up in the Memberlist and either PM (Private Message) them or e-mail them if they have listed one.

Good Luck..

Charlie

Thanks, Bill, thanks, Charlie!

Quite frankly, I don't feel comfortable writing specific people out of the blue asking them to show their boats to a stranger.

I'm hoping that someone with a boat I can see will get in touch with me if they wish to spread the C-Dory gospel to a potential convert.

A few words of introduction may be in order:

I am a journalist who is editor of Circumnavigator <http://www.circumnavigatormag.com> and field editor of Power Cruising <http://www.powercruisingmag.com>.

I have skippered my own sailboat across the Atlantic, I've raced from New York to San Francisco around Cape Horn, and I've crossed the Pacific and Atlantic in trawler yachts, including a passage across the pond this summer: <http://radio.weblogs.com/0137829/>.

Now, I want to explore waters closer to home as this wish list indicates:

-- Enjoy Trent-Severn Waterway
-- Loop Thousand Islands, St. Lawrence River and Rideau Canal
-- Cruise the North Channel
-- Explore Lake Superior
-- Take the train to Moosonee for a poke around James Bay
-- Follow the Ottawa River to its source
-- Circumnavigate Vancouver Island
-- Enjoy the Inside Passage
-- Circumnavigate Cape Breton Island and cruise Lake Bras d'Or
-- Make the passage to Isles de la Madeleine in the Gulf of St. Lawrence
-- Circumnavigate Newfoundland
-- Look for icebergs and whales off the Labrador coast.

The plans is to write about my cruising adventures for magazines and newspapers on a freelance basis, in addition to maintaining on ongoing web site.

I'm looking for a small and inexpensive cruising powerboat with which to tackle my wish list, sometimes singlehanded and sometimes with Significant Other. Thus, my interest in taking a close look at C-Dory.

Georgs, don't be bashful. I've had lots of unsolicited requests and they don't bother me nor do I think they'd bother anyone else. Take a look at the book "River Horse"

RIVER HORSE: A Voyage Across America, by William Least Heat- Moon (Houghton Mifflin, $26, 0395636264, due out in October) "Using this country's waterways, the author travels from the New York Harbor to Astoria, Oregon, in his little C-dory, Nikawa ('river horse' in Osage). As good as his previous book Blue Highways is, I think this one is even better."--Diane Gilbert Cohen, Books & Company, Oconomowoc, WI

It's a great story, done with a C-Dory 22. Sounds like what you want!

Hope someone gets in touch with you to give you a local ride.

These ain't people - they're C-Brats!! Actually, they are all wonderful people. One thing you'll discover about the CD is that the people who choose to own them are all of the same ilk. Vastly different lives, but similar lifestyles and all seem to enjoy it at the same pace. I doubt that you could find a C-Dory owner who would be put off by an opportunity to tell you what exactly it is they like about it.

Your life sounds fscinanting, as well. Please share as much of your stories as you want. And don't hesitate to link to your own site in a message when new stories of interest are posted.

Good luck on your search.

Just to close off this thread, I want to thank Ed Devlin of the TomCat 24 Goose and Dun Smith of the C-Dory 22 CTYankee for opening their boats to a curious Significant Other and me.

The C-Dory is a great little boat, but the TomCat sure is appealing, despite its higher cost, so a decision will not come easy.
