E-Bay and Warantee

On Jan 30 2008, I had posted a reference to a situation where it appeared that RayMarine was not honoring a warantee on a less than 2 year old item purchased on E-Bay. Within the last couple of days, at least some of the issues were clarified.

This is what was posted on the Hull Truth by the person who had obtained what he thought was a brand new unit on E-Bay:

"it turned out the unit I purchased as NEW….in fact wasn’t new!

It was sold by an authorized RAYMARINE dealer in a foreign country and installed on a customer’s vessel. It had failed shortly thereafter. Back lighting had failed. Yes it was manufactured in 2005, installed in 2005 and broke down in 2005.

Probably all within a couple of months time. RAYMARINE had authorized a Brand New replacement to be installed and had the defective unit picked up by their dealer. As it turns out, different than US, in some of the countries RM does business the units are NOT always returned back to US for repairs."

It turns out that the unit had been installed on a vessel, failed, was kept in a foreign dealer's shop, and eventually found its way on E-Bay. The unit appeared to be in the origional box and sealed when the purcasher recieved it. So buyer beware. I'll stick with buying from folks I know!

Wow that is tough... and with all the scams going on, I believe it is not an isolated deal.... I often wonder how someone on EBAY can sell a new item at a price that must be lower than wholesale.....

I just got a transducer from an internet retailer that I had never heard of before... and wondered if it was someone working out of their garage...I had been looking for the transducer...for a 6 year old SiTex depth sounder for several months... it probably was old stock, sitting on someones shelf....but what the heck...it is new and I was willing to take a chance... but I knew it was a chance dealing with someone I never heard of.... it worked out fine.. could have been a scam.
