Bill and El Fiero (Halcyon, Halcyon Days website and book)

Thanks for posting this. I'm glad to hear both are still kicking. I feel fortunate to have been able to meet them in person at at least one CBGT and to have communicated with Bill multiple times via this site. I always enjoyed their posts about the travels they took and I admired their...

    help finding gasket material

If they are flat gaskets, I find you can buy anything you need at McMaster Carr. Just get sheets and trim it with an exacto knife.

    Wallas cooktop/heater

I had a Wallas in my previous 22 and have one in my Tomcat. I think I had the one in the 22 repaired once for around a few 100$'s and the one in the Tomcat has operated without a repair for about 9 years. The biggest problem I have with the one on the Tomcat is that if it isn't run for awhile...

    Reefnets

One of the hard things to estimate is that a fish that is caught is only counted as a hatchery fish if it's marked. There are two issues with this - 1) Not every fish is marked (although most Alaska fish are these days) and 2) Hatchery fish that are not caught go on to breed with other fish...

    Reefnets

Here is data from NPFAC (downloaded in 2019, I haven't updated to this year yet). Alaska hatchery production ramped up from the late 70's to mid 80's. Alaska commercial harvest ramped up over the same time period with a slight delay. The change in the composition of the harvest switched more...

    Reefnets

The vast majority of Alaskan caught fish these days are hatchery produced and are marketed as "wild caught" or "troll caught" to distinguish them from farmed fish. Technically, I think it would be more accurate to call these "ranched" fish as they live in the wild (after leaving the hatchery)...

Nav aid for the Columbia River

I use Navionics in combination with my Lowrance chart plotters all the time on the lower Columbia and haven't observed any differences of significance between them. I'd feel confident using Navionics on my phone down there if that's all I had for some reason. However, I'm set up to always have...

Passing of Warren Keuffel - AKA Doryman

While he hasn't posted here for awhile, I thought many of you might be interested in learning that Warren passed away earlier this month. I learned of this via an automated Google search for "C-Dory" and the notification with his obituary showed up in my email this AM. I met Warren and one or...

Indoor, insulated storage space with power for boat

Well let me know. We close next week on 8/10/21. The storage space is fully covered and completely insulated.

    Boating Alone

I used to take my 22 out alone. I like having company and there is some safety in having another person on board but you can go it alone if need be. There are a lot of things you can do to increase safety - kill switches on your person, a small handheld radio and PLB on the life vest + a float...

    Ocean going (Tuna) advice

Agreed. When I had my 22, I regularly fished for salmon at Swiftsure bank (20 miles out of Neah Bay) and I have also fished Blue Dot a few times (about 35 miles out). Near shore fishing for salmon is no problem but again, one needs to pick their days and areas.

    Ocean going (Tuna) advice

I've done a bunch of tuna trips in my Tomcat but never went in my my 22. There are a number of considerations: fuel capacity/range/distance to the tuna, ice capacity, wind/waves, and experience/judgement of the skipper. I'll discuss each turn. 1) The primary limitation on the 22 is fuel. My...

Indoor, insulated storage space with power for boat

All, If everything goes well, we will soon own a property near Birch Bay that has on the property 2 indoor, insulated storage spaces with power. One is 24' x 48' with a 10' high door and the other is 15' x 50' with a 12' high door. The Tomcat will go in the 15' x 50' unit but I anticipate...

What's Seattle really like these days?

Not arguing at all with the numbers. But... My sense is that this is mostly a consequence of so much of the rental market in Seattle being occupied by tech workers for Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Apple and others. Certainly a huge fraction of the most expensive rentals in the downtown...

    Centering boat on trailer

Why not just get the boat centered once and move the side bunks in a bit? The bow is narrower than the stern, if the side bunks are tight, it will self center (as long as the side bunks are high enough and it doesn't sit on top of them). On the float on trailer for my TomCat, there are guides...

What's Seattle really like these days?

Yes - I live across from Magnuson Park and go there regularly to walk the dog. I've also taken my grandchildren to play in several other parks. I also work downtown near the corner of Dexter and Mercer and just drove through downtown proper yesterday afternoon (and many times recently). While...
