Paining aluminum outboard drive legs and especially I/O drives that are left submerged in the water year round is one of the great difficult tasks that defy simple explanation or execution.
After having dug into this topic myself for some several hours, I thought I'd share some sources of information for our C-Brat members with outboards requiring painting and especially those of us who also own boats with outdrives.
So here are three sources of thoughtful information.
BEWARE THE ADVERTISING PITCHES OF PAINT MANUFACTURERS WHO CLAIM THEIR 16 oz $35/SPRAY CAN OF MIRACLE PAINT IS A CURE-ALL REQUIRING JUST THE PUSH OF A BUTTON FOR 5 MINUTES OF MINDLESS MAINTAINENCE!

Thanks Joe,
We needed that Before summer I repainted both of my 1988 Evinrudes with the factory, "Silver Blue". Interesting, after several months exposure to the sun and salt water emersion, both motors have picked up a "Greenish Tinge" to the paint. *No, It's not moss. Another Winter project Along with replacing the VOR pump. Jack |

Thanks Joe! Good timing too. I just picked up some outdrive parts for the 27' and will be tearing the old one down to rebuild it and repaint it.
Quote: | Zinc-Chromate Primer. A lot of people swear by this stuff. It is very good coating on etched aluminum, but not under water! It contains zinc! Think about that for a moment? There is one place to use zinc-chromate. On your bearing carrier after repainting the drive.

I found this extremely interesting. Kinda like DOH! _________________ Gary Johnson
