flrockytop,

I would check out NewEgg.com before buying from TigerDirect. It looks like they have several of the Asus Eee notebooks with the SSD HDD and their prices are better. Plus NewEgg has always had good customer service.

Thanks for the reminder gljjr, I had forgotten about NewEgg. I got to reading the reviews and like most reviews they ran the gambit from great to awful so I went to the local Best Buy and dang if they didn't have one for the same price as the on line stores. I got one and am typing on it now. I've been loading software all day. I put "The Capn" on with all of the NOAA charts(almost 4gig). So far I am impressed, and I think it is going to work just fine. It fits just right on on my cd22 dash. I going to do some sea test tomorrow and will report. This poor thread has been pretty well highjacked so I'll start a new topic.

Thanks Cmiii,
I bought the GPS 18 to feed my laptop directly thru a USB connector which leaves no accessibility to wires between the Sensor and USB male end. Plug it into the computer with "Inland Lakes" Garmin software and all works great on the laptop screen. My problem is how to get from the computer to the S1000 input wires. Wonder about coming out the 2nd USB port with another UBS connector with wires. Maybe it cannot be done. Thanks for your help. Zelpha

In loading my software I ran across this on garmin usb gps units. Explains your problems.

The USB version of Garmin GPS receivers (like Garmin 1Cool do not support NMEA, they only support Garmin's own protocol. Therefore very few GPS applications can use Garmin USB GPS receivers. GpsGate solves this problem! You can connect GpsGate to a Garmin USB GPS and GpsGate will make the Garmin GPS appear as a normal NMEA GPS connected to a serial port. And! You can connect any number of GPS applications to the GPS at the same time! Including nRoute!

WOW! You know my Dad raised us with some pretty high ethics and firm morals that have served me well, but all of a sudden I find out he's involved in GPS-GATE!

This GPS-GATE has something to do with sex and ants, backwards compatibility, serial dongles and all sorts of coded messages regarding r232!

Next thing you know I'll discover he was at Woodstock or something!

I use my own chart plotting software, which you can get free at -

http://smittypaddler.com/chartview/index.htm

Be aware, you need Linux, Perl Perl/Gtk to run it. I've always hoped to see a group of collaborators develop, but so far no others have expressed any interest. I just used it yesterday to navigate the shoals along the east shore of Lake Winnebago.

Someone led me to an online magazine called MadMariner.com which has a whole series of articles on PC based GPS and software reviews. There is a free 30 day registration period and it is an interesting site.

I learned quite a bit there. For those who just want the bottom line, their consensus is kind of "you get what you pay for". Best $0-100 is SeaClear II (free), Best $100-300 is Tiki Navigator($148), Best $300-1000 is Coastal Explorer ($499). Just their opinion and there were lots of close seconds.
