I am interested in installing "through the hull" rod holders in my 1995 cd-22 cruiser. I would like to install a 4 holder spreaded unit on the back of the hard top(mounted on top, not through the hull). And 4 "through the hull" units in the cockpit, two on the stern ond one each port and starboard. When trolling for rockfish I would like to be able to use 4-6 rods without downriggers. Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm a little concerned about having "through the hull" type aft but the stainless steel units look very nice.
Any recommendations or pictures would be greatly appreciated, I apologize if this topic has already been addressed

I wonder if the Gunnel area is wide enough for them on the 22 C-Ds? I was interested in them years ago but decided against them because most that I looked at could not be angled enough out to the sides without sticking out under the gunnel into the cockpit area.

josepepper I ran across these on ebay yesterday http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3609450171&category=384
If this is the type your looking for it's a heck of a deal for 40 bucks, Can't shed much light on your mounting question. My 25' has a different det of challanges to use this type of holder but I may look a little closer at installing a set now.

stevej,
Thanks for the link, the more I think about it the more I want to put a stainless rail on the stern and mount the rod holders with brackets to the rail. That would allow me to move or adjust them easily or remove them for storage. I may do the same thing with the rocket launchers on the hard top if I can find a custom rail for her. I will probably do the stern rail myself first. I just can't get past the thought of a hole saw on the gunnals.

josepepper if I can find the issue powerboat report did a test of SS rail mount pole holders, I remember that a couple of units broke under their test procedure. Give me a couple of days and I'll see if I can find it.

Josepepper - I saw a C-Dory last weekend with the rod holder setup you mentioned up front, and they stuck out past the gunnel, exactly like Red Fox thought they would. Once you saw holes that big in the gunnel, it's pretty irreversible. I like rod holders that put the rod butt completely outboard of the gunnel, because there's nothing more irritating than running into the rod butts that stick out inside the cockpit. It really takes away from the effective cockpit fishing area.

josepepper,
Check out the Vector Sports rod holders - I have two of the triple setups, they make good stuff. I've not mounted mine yet, cuz I haven't gotten up the nerve to ask Mike to make me adaptor plates for my Scotty downrigger bases...
If you go with the flat mounting bases, you can remove them when not needed, leaving only a very thin plate behind.

Da Nag,
Thanks for the link, they are beaut's but like the Fox sayeth... kinda pricey. hate to give up alcohol or dog food for 2 weeks. I had an interesting idea, how about mounting two stainless bars across the back of the transom. The outer bar could be positioned a few inches from the motor so it would not interfere with steering. The inner bar could be used for clamping in adjustable rod holders. It may be possible to fasten a basket inset between them as well, if not using the rod holders a cooler could be dropped in or a custom cutting board for hacking apart those 36" stripers we see in the Chesapeake.
On another note I wet sanded my hull with a fine sponge sanding bar and compounded her, then added 2 coats of wax. She cleaned up real nice. I'm looking for an epoxy gelcoat repair kit that will match a 95 hull.
She really ate my driveway but the wife is taking a shine to her, the Terrier bit the mailman today so he might be living in the cabin for a while
Everyone that drives by wants to know where she came from and me and my Dad Christened her with a 12 pack the night we backed her in, they threatened to put a bucket of water under the trailer so at 2am we finally came in the house. |
