Brats,
I was thinking of going to Sekiu and try for a salmon or two this weekend, has anyone been lately? The fishing reports says they are getting a few, I just want to know if it is worth the effort, not that spending the weekend on the boat would not be reward enough.
Thanks for any thoughts from fellow brats.

I just got back last saturday, we had really good luck with kings. A lot of hatchery fish. as the week progressed we caught fewer fish. No Coho's at all. We caught 3 halibut 1 was 50#.

I found that it can be a very hit or miss deal. even from boat to boat. I am going up there on the 23rd of July for 5 days. It is an annual trip for me. Picked those days as the tides are moderate. We go every year about this time. Have to say I have not been disappointed yet. Go on up you'll have fun.

Brats,
Thanks for the information, I called out to Vanrippen's to reserve a slip but the do not take reservations, so I guess I'll just take my chances. I will try to contact Olsen's today and see about a spot. Chuck do you use bait or down rigger fish for the best success?
Mwilson did you spend a lot of time chasing halibut? How deep did you need to fish to have success? If I had a general direction to go for that activity I would give it a try, I'm not wanting any trade secrets but any help would be appreciated. I have some gear for that but mainly salmon fish at this point.
Thanks,
Dan. |

We caught Butts at 200 plus. Those fishing charts have spots marked that are pretty good. Go straight out from Sekiu to 300 feet and put some salmon bellies on the bottom.
We also troll for them just off the bottom with the same gear we use for salmon. good luck

I mostly troll as I like to cover as much water as I can. When trolling I always use down riggers even when fish are showing shallow on the finder. Controled depth fishing. And no lead on the line. I run my fashers on 6-7 ft leaders hooked to the rigger balls. Than my cut plug or spoon is on releases 2 ft above and 2ft behind flasher. I don't catch more that way, but I don't catch less either. And a whole lot more fun.Nothing between me and the fish but 2 hooks and a chain swivel. Last year all but 3 fish were caught on artifical. But we do very well with cut plugs, but you have to deal with dogfish, even trolling. I think that tis year I will try and mooch more as the tides are alittle better this year. You will not have any problems with dock space at Olsons. they have alot. Have never seen them full. Hope to see the Shannon-Colleen there
