Does anyone know where I can get those red battery terminal covers for boat batteries? I understand you need them to get a safety inspection.

Thanks

Patrick

Patrick,

I try and get my boat inspected anytime I see a CG Auxiliary inspection going on, and I have never been advised to have nipples covering the battery terminals. I am assuming that you mean the type that go over the wires and terminals. If you need to do that, an electrical supply company should have them.

Where did you hear that this was a requirement?

Steve

I did a quick search at West Marine, "Battery Terminal Cover", came up with marine covers for $6.99 a pair.

Battery terminals must be covered. Either the battery should be in a covered battery container or the + and - terminals must be covered or enclosed. An accidental shorting could cause a battery explosion or fire.

Terminal covers are readily available at auto parts stores, Walmart ,Etc. for about$4-$6/pair. I know because I just finished looking to get ready for my Vessel Safety Check. I also got some rubber screw covers to go over exposed screw threads at the batteries. Those came from Home Depot but any hardware store should have them. if you drop a wrench and get a short across the terminals the wrench can quickly weld itself in place, there's no off switch and something really ugly can happen.

I like the idea of the boxes. That protects the whole shebang and keeps stuff dry. Of course, it also holds water if it leaks Rolling Eyes
