Last Friday we cruised over to Langley. We saw and talked with Ben, but did not tie up. He's all ready for us!

We're planning to head over Friday afternoon and can drop a couple of crab traps on the way as well. We're coming from Sandy Hook (we just moved TwoLuckyFish in almost next to Judy Blue Eyes!). We've been crabbing just outside Cultus Bay, and have caught a few keepers, along with lots of under sized and females. We pulled today and caught three (in two traps), so...

I thought Elger Bay was "almost" on the way to the clamming beach, so I figured we'd drop two traps Friday on the way in to Langley, then check Sat am and again after clamming. We might have even more traps to set if I can recover some tomorrow that I put in deep water (oops!).

Seeing as we are "locals", and this is our first C-Brat adventure, what can we bring? We could harvest some corn, and have a ton of cucumbers. What do you do with cucumbers? They don't seem to work as crab bait, and no salmon has even hit one that we know....

We've been clamming at Double Bluff (other side of Whidbey) with great success, but can't figure how to clam from a boat without a dingy. We are ready and willing, but need suggestions?

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Mac& Linda,

Two Lucky Fish

Welcome Mac & Linda
The corn is taken care of. I have about 8 acres of it planted for fresh market so I will be bringing it.

As for Elger Bay, yes it is on the way over to the Clam beds but is a ways accross and north from Langley. on flat water it is about a 20 minute run full out. but if the water is at all lumpy you are looking at 30 to 40 minutes crossing. I was thinking about laying the pots just outside Langley Friday and pull on the way to clamming on Sat. morning. if there arn't very many crab we could move them to Elger Bay then.I have 4 pots to set .

Hi Roger,

We have had a bit of success with the whole crabbing thing. First, you must understand that we are really newbys, but have paid a lot of attention to what others have found to be successful. We usually put out two pots, sometimes as many as four if we have enough licensed crew aboard. Although we have used turkey legs and frozen carb 'bait' available at various retail outlets, we have had by far our best results using horse clams and salmon heads and other parts that I personally don't care for. We leave the pots out for 12 to 24 hours.

We live at the south end of Whidbey Island at Sandy Hook. We drop our pots in 30 to 45 feet of water along Possession Bar, approximately 1/2 mile south of Possession Point.

I really suspect that you will have good luck almost anywhere from Langley around to Possession Point if you just use horse clams and leave them out overnight. We had our whole family here for the past two weeks and in that time we trapped 50 keeper Dungeness crabs, using horse clams and salmon.

We hope that this helps...

John and Judy Kent
Crew, Judy Blue Eyes

Hi! Mac...regarding your cucumbers....grab a big bowl, combine THINLY sliced cucumbers, onions, olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper...let sit overnight. This goes well as a salad with salmon or crab. This is a recipe from John's Grandmother in West Virginia, but we have adapted it to the NorthWest using Walla Walla sweets. Maybe you can't catch salmon with them, but it goes well with it. We went blackberry picking last week, so I will bring some Blackberry Cobbler to the pot luck. See you all soon.

Judy

Hi Judy and crew,

I have been making the Walla Walla Onion Salad for many years. My recipes also uses chopped Cilantro and some thinly sliced red bell peppers for color.
I have an aunt and uncle that have lived at Sandy Hook for a long time. Don and Jean Goodfellow. They used to have "Poor Jeans" a shop in Langley.

Will miss the Langley trip this year. It is a fun week-end. Have a great time.

Mac and Linda, Judy and John, nice to have you join us. I think you'll have fun with this weekend's bunch, and find you might like to come to future gigs.

OK, no poll on the beer...it always comes out "Whatever Brock wants" anyway. I hope Brock wants Copperhead, because that is what I am bringing...

Where are you planning on meeting for dinner Friday evening? Judy of the Bue Eyes and I will probably just drive up Friday for dinner and the BS session and then motor around early Saturday AM for the clamming, communal BS and general socializing. If Mac and Linda are not boating around on Friday, perhaps they could ride up with us???

Mike's Place has great food, including all you can eat fish, chips and chowder; the downside is that they close at 8:00pm. Cafe Langley serves really good Mediterranean food and there are serveral other very good restaraunts in the downtown area. All of this to ask: where are you planning to have dinner Friday evening?

Carol's brother visited us last week and not only did we get him out crabbing with us two times, but he also enjoyed several of your brews that we purchased at Haggens in order to be sure that he experienced the true flavor of the Pacific Northwest. Copperhead was his preference, so when I talk to him on the phone, I'll let him know that he departed too soon and won't be able to partake of Copperhead out of the keg! I'm certain that he'll be crying his eyes out! Cry Cry Cry Cry

Finally I can smell the fresh air. Two weeks of work without a day off makes for a very appreciative upcoming weekend.

Cynthia made a pot of beans for the dock hounds, and that includes Coco too!

We should be there somewhere around 8:00 p.m. Friday night.

Yeah, especially when C-Lou mixes in 29 different kinds of beans. Crook
