Downriggers and Planer Boards

Let me ask what is probably a dumb question to those of you who know more about fishing than I do, which of course, is probably all of you. Recently, I tried to run an in-line planer board in rough seas and naturally, the release kept tripping. In researching the issue, it seems to me that the large, dual planer boards which can handle these conditions are usually deployed off a mast and separate line, with only the fishing line and lure weight tugging on the release. Is there any reason one could not run one of these dual planer boards from a downrigger (minus cannonball), since it already has the cable, boom, and auto retrieve? I suspect the answer will be that because of its lower mount, one would have more cable slicing through the water using a downrigger boom than a higher planer board mast. But is it totally crazy or perhaps worth a try? I just don’t want to add more stuff if I don’t have to.
