Hi Everyone,
I finally took the leap and purchased a used C-Dory 22 Cruiser. I have followed this site for a long time and finally found the deal I have been looking for. Looking forward to making some of the cruises and meeting some of you fine folks.

Welcome CAVU. So what is YOUR name. Congratulations on getting the boat. I have a daughter living in Spokane Valley so get over there more often than most.

Where will you be boating in general? Lake Roosevelt and Coeur'd len ( I'll have to learn how to spell it) come to mind.

Keep us posted as to your boats name, your name etc. CAVU ----------Clear and Visibility Unlimited?????

David,
Most of my boating has involved fishing and my favorite type of fishing is salmon fishing. I make at least one trip a year to the salt water. I also fish Coeur d'Alene, Lake Roosevelt, and Lake Koocanusa in Montana. I have a 19' Arima I have fished for the last seven years but I hope to do some cruising and overnighting with the CD. The name CAVU is an acronym from my military days. I used to fly C-130's in SE Asia and we used it to describe weather: ceiling and visibility unlimited (good news if you were looking for a small dirt strip in the jungle).

Ken, Excellant, we now have a name and a name. Ceiling and Visibility Unlimited. I was close. Well when you get to needing some salt on your boat let us out here in the San Juans know. I am a novice at fishing. Have a license and a pole and some limited tackle but not much experience or knowledge. Crabbing however I can kick butt-o-la.

I think we can get the "keepers of the gate" to set you up with an album so you can post pictures. That is just after they set up an album for the Canadian 5 boat adventure that is going on as we speak, and that I was a part, of until today when we had to return to Guemes Is.

Hi CAVU...Ron here, aka "digger" on Snoopy-C. I live in Spokane, and fish mostly on Coeur d'Alene, but some on Roosevelt, and usually one trip to Vancouver Island, initiating at Port Alberni, and going down the Alberni inlet usually to Bamfield. This year we got 6 guys, and 2 C-Dories going the last week of July. Tomorrow the wife and I are going to truck down to Port Alberni and take the Lady Rose (a passenger and freight ferry) to Bamfield and back, and then truck on over to Tofino to do some fishing. I won't be checking the email for about a week, but expect to see you on coeur d'alene. Most of my fishing there is between Powderhorn, Gasser Pt., and the Spokane Pt. Harrison area. Welcome aboard. I will be at Ucluelet from 8 Jul to 5 Aug so maybe our paths will cross. I met you last year on the ferry and exchanged some waypoints. Is there another C-Dory in Spokane? I will be fishing Ucluelet in my Arima since I don't have time to get the CD rigged up before I leave. Good luck on your trip.

Yah, I remember sitting at the ferry station at Duke Pt. Yup, one more C-Dory in Spokane that i know of. He'll be at Bamfield with us. I just installed a new 4 stroke yamaha 90 on his boat for him. We'll be fishing out of Bamfield during the last week. Will be staying at the Tide's Inn all the way inside of the inlet at Bamfield almost as far as it goes. If you are around give me a holler on channel 16, "Snoopy-C" and we can compare notes. Glad you got your boat. Wish that I could stay and fish as long as you guys do. Where will you be staying? Perhaps if we get over your way we could also stop and say hi. It is a beautiful trip between Ucluelet and Bamfield through the Broken Isls. although it appears that some of the area will be closed inside.

So, how do you have the CD rigged. Regards, Ron

Ron,
It had twin 40HP Hondas, Wallas stove/heater, and opening front center window. It is the dark green trim. I hope to add a lot of new stuff over the winter. We will be camping at Island West Resort. I have several groups coming over to fish during my 4 weeks there, but we always make a few trips over to Bamfield during our stay. We have been doing this trip for 15 years and I really love the west coast/Barkley Sound area.

So Ken, tell me about your latest fishing at Ucluelet. We spent about a week at Bamfield again, and the Coho fishing was about like last year (extremely productive). We went offshore searching for halibut, but was unsuccessful this time. About the 4th of July I tried halibut at Tofino, via charter, and also had no luck. I would guess that the month you spent at Ucluelet you did well on all accounts. We did get about 25 percent limit on the kings this year. Had a couple great ones on, but managed to loose them at the boat.

I would like to hear from both of you about your trips. We will be on the the West Coast of Vancouver Island from August 28th until September 11th. Last year we spent two weeks in Tofino and Clayoquot Sound on the boat. This year we will spend the first week headquartered at the 4th Street Dock in Tofino enjoying the great restaurants and beautiful beaches. We will trailer to Ucluelet and spend the second week in Barkley Sound fishing and exploring.

We know the Tofino area well, but haven't been in Barkley Sound. We plan on starting in Ucluelet and then exploring and anchoring out in the Broken Island group. We also want to get to Bamfield and the surrounding area.

I was thinking about mooring at the small boat harbor in Ucluelet. Do you think Island West is better?

Hi All;
I see y'all have the Wallace stoves in quite a few of the CDs out there. It may be too late to add it to the '25 but what is the residual heat factor to those units?

When I took the sea trial here the sales fella said it would be too hot an item to use here in the Norfolk/ VA Beach area and there is a lot of residual. I plan to do do some minor local coastal cruising as often as possible. We can pretty much be in the h2o 10 to 11 months of the year.

I know I can always add it later, but a plan makes it more affordable, now. My add-on toy shopping list is longer than my check book...sound familiar?

There is water on the right coast worth exploring. So I hope to meet some of the CD family when I'm 'all wet' here in VA Beach or during my explorations of the Ches. Bay.

I had a great trip, although I had to cut it a few days short. My fishing partner had to leave due to a medical emergency with his brother. I ended up fishing alone a few days until some of our scheduled visitors arrived. I didn't make it over to Bamfield his time, but I did hear someone hailing you on the radio one day while I was fishing offshore. I also attemped to hail you with no success. I ended up with chinook of 36,35,26,20 and four facory coho of 5-7#. Some of my company got into some good halibutt, but I didn't bring any home. We ate a few small ones but nothing of any size. Best fishing during the trip was at South Bank and Southwest Corner. Big Bank was great for Halibutt but we only made it out there once(22 mi run each way). Overall this year was the best for very large salmon I have seen in the 15yrs I have been fishing Ucluelet. I saw 40+# salmon everyday at the cleaning table, unfortunately none of them were mine!

I think you would be happy at either place. I like Island West because I take a truck camper and tow my boat behind it. I like camping right next to the marina and leaving the boat in the water at their docks. During August it will be almost impossible to get into Island West unless you made reservations last year. After Labor Day, the place will be almost deserted! I prefer to fish July when it is not quite so crowded. By Labor Day the coho fishing will be great, but the chinook fishing will be tailing off. I have fished at this time, and have got some nice chinook, but you will have to work a little harder for them. If your plan is to fish in the Broken Group, you need to know there is a fishing ban in most of the islands. You will need to read the fisheries notices at Island West and plot all the coordinates on your chart. Basically you can fish the periphery, but not up inside the islands. In reality the best fishing will be outside anyway. The closed area is to protect inshore rockfish species.

seems to me that the best fishing I've seen has been Tofino, and Ucluelet for outside stuff. At end of July all of the inside of the Broken Group was closed for finfish, but that is just the islands truly on the inside where the fishing isn't quite as good. There are areas within Bamfield where moorage is easy. As you enter Bamfield there is a large moorage to your port that is just before you pass the fisheries school in a relatively large bay. You should be able to look it up on a Bamfield map. Also, if you go deep into the Bamfield inlet there are some power lines that you can pass under through a narrow channel, and once inside there is a quite sustantial moorage where you can safely and quietly drop hook. It is a much quieter inlet than the Ucluelet area. Hope that provides a bit of information for you. Good luck and enjoy the trip. I could spend months up there if my wife's garden, the lawn and the dog would allow it.
