We thought for a long time about how to "finish" our teak trim. We tried the teak oil treatment on the five small pieces outside the cabin, but the wood quickly absorbed the oil and continued to whiten and lose it's beauty.

We broke down and purchased some Bristol Finish from the factory in Florida. You've probably seen the ads in Passagemaker or other magazines about this product. We pulled everything out from the cabin and applied two coats inside, six coats to the little outside pieces. WOW! It looks great! Bristol claims the finish will last for 2-3 years without any more treatments. Because we live in the harsh Arizona temps, we liked that idea. But it only took us an afternoon to "wet" apply the coats, one hour apart. We can't believe the difference it made in the cabin. I'll try to post a few pics after completion. We already have some pics showing the dull before pics.

I would like to hear from any of you who have chosen different finishes and the pros & cons. Bristol cost us $70 for a quart and we have more than half left over. If it retains the look it has now and we only have to mess with it every few years, it's a great investment in money & time.

Congratulations on the "varnish" job. I have heard good things about Bristol--I don't do Varnish any more--that is I try and avoid boats with exterior teak.

All in all, thru the years, whe have concluded that the best way to keep the boat looking the best is some varnish. If it is dinged--as soon as possiable put some more varnish over the chip or ding. If moisture gets under the finish it will lift--and a chance the wood will discolor.

There are many opinions on oils, cetol, epoxy, urethanes etc...But we went back to varnish.
