I am about to have Master Marine in Mount Vernon do the scupper upgrade on my boat. Is there anything I should now about this upgrade? Has the upgrade improved the cockpit drainage and by how much? Is it something that should be done?

Thanks
Fred

Patty here. We definitely think the scupper enlargement was worth it. It's much easier to hose out the cockpit but more importantly, it's much harder for water to come into the cockpit. The flaps really do their job. For extra protection, however, we found bathtub plugs that fit perfectly that we use sometimes.

Fred, I had mine done quite a long time ago and it did sove the problem of water coming into the cabin when you had a lot of weight in the back. I've never been properly pooped however, so I don't know how fast the water can get out when underway.

I guess I have not experienced the water coming back into the cockpit thru the scuppers. I do have an issue with it leaving when it rains or I wash the cockpit down. My big concern is getting pooped and would like it to drain better than it does.
I do wonder of the experiences that others have had with Master Marine. I sure would like to do this just once.

Fred, I'm not sure what scupper upgrades you have in mind, but I had the factory put in check valves when we had water leaks. No complaints about the work, but I took them out to let the water drain out.

The head on those scuppers is about only 2", and the flappers in the check valve just stayed closed, not enough pressure to open them. Of course the head went from +2" to -2" when there were a couple of people in the rear. I'm looking for plugs of the correct size as Pat mentioned.

Ball scuppers , as Dora-Jean installed only work on C-25s that have the open transom. That went away in 2005.

Boris,

Do those 'check valves' have a spring tensioner to keep them closed that could perhaps be changed to a weaker spring?

Are we all talking about the new scuppers that are installed in the 2008 models?

Could this be a do-it-yourself project? Seems you would just have to get the parts from the factory or a supplier, ream out the holes and install the new parts. Does anyone know the cost of parts or cost for parts and installation?

The factory sold us all the materials for under $100.00. Just waiting for the weather to warm up to install them.

mmitchell,

What were the parts? If they're commercial, maybe we could get them from a marine store. The check valves I have were installed in 2006.

Steve/Dora-Jean,

I never looked inside. I just thought they were a piece of rubber, with a flap stamped in it.

Mark,
We talked at length at the C-Dory gathering at the Hawthorne, are you going to do the installation yourself ?

Boris,
The 2006 check valves are installed inline with the hose.
The 2008 check valves only have a flapper installed in the scupper. But hopefully the advantage will be bigger diameter and stuff not getting into the check valve and being able to visually check the flapper. The factory sent the hose, clamps, and both the scuppers for the outside of the boat and inside the deck.
Russ,
Planning on installing them myself as the diameter of the holes only need to be increased about a 1/2 inch. If all fails will still be able to add an additional backflow inline with the hose. Not planning on using the hose the factory sent as it has ridges. Bought a hose from a local rubber company in town that will work better in this application.
