My new boat has a Lewmar anchor windlass 700. I do not know which anchor I have, but can find out Monday.

The anchor does not release when I try to use it. I do not know why nor does Brian at West Marine.

Does this windlass require a specific anchor or anchor type in order to have the anchor work?

Thank you in advance,

Anne Cox

Is the anchor getting hung up on the bow roller ?? My anchor over centers and does not free fall by itself... it's my bow roller... once it starts it's fine.. it does not bother me so I never do anything about it...

Thanks for the reply. The anchor does get hung up, but I have not noticed exactly where. As I recall it does not budge. I will go to Everett and check out more details today or tomorrow and then post.

When the anchor on Journey On hangs up, I just power out to put some slack in the anchor rode, open the center window and jab the anchor with a boat hook. No need to go up front. Works every time (the anchor hangs up.) Pulling the anchor up, I like to have someone on the foredeck to clean the rode off, if mud or seaweed comes up.

There are two ways to let out the chain--one is to power out--be sure that you don't bunch up the chain and damage the motor/clutch. The second is to release the clutch--a 1/2" square socket drive is both the clutch release and the manual handle for the windlass in case the electric motor does not work. Also be sure if you have the power down or the free fall windlass.

Be sure that the windlass breaker is "on" and that it will power in and out. I would loosen the clutch before powering up the windlass. Also be sure that there is no pin thru the crown of the anchor.

Most anchors can be self launching on the factory pulpits.

It is a matter of balance. The C-Dory has a swept up bow and the fairlead is tilted up. I changed the fairlead on the c-dory and the Ranger to a tilt type. Never hangs up anymore. Today I found out the all chain rode is much better. No problems with numerous drops and retrieves. The bruce works well, more weight out, and resets with wind or tide change.

Captd-

We're on the same page regarding the pivoting anchor roller and all chain rode.

I have a Quick Aires 500 windlass, a Fortress FX-16 anchor, a Lewmar pivoting bow roller, and 100 feet of 1/4" G-4 chain followed by 200 feet of 1/2" three strand nylon.

Works every time!

Pivoting Bow Roller.

Thanks to all of you who responded to my questions about the issue of my anchor not dropping with the windlass. The anchor that would not deploy with my Lewmar windlass is now off the bow of my boat and I have a setup that works. The issue of holes in the fiberglass that would need to be plugged when changing out the bow roller and the fact that I would need to hire that done led to another solution.
I now have the Lewmar Delta that does what it advertises: it truly is a self launching anchor!
I am planning to keep the original anchor as an extra anchor as required for SEA COASTER to serve as an Operational Auxiliary Vessel with the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Thank you again for all your suggestions! BaseCampAnne
