I have been thinking about joining this poker run for a while and this is the year. I was wandering how many others would be interested in this event. I called and talked to one of the orginizers on the phone . Below is the email he sent me with a link to the even. It sound like a really fun day on the water for a good cause. A way to give back to others and still go boating.

Tom,

Thanks for the conversation. Ten or so boats from the C-Brats would be an awesome addition to the Leukemia Cup. Some key info:
March 26 evening - Leukemia Cup Kick-Off Meeting, Elliott Bay Marina
June 7 - Leukemia Cup, Elliott Bay Marina
June 7 evening - Leukemia Cup Auction Party, Bell Harbor Marina Seattle

Web Site: www.leukemiacup.org/wa

Last year we raised over $150,000, a significant contribution from the boating community. The way I think of it is that it was enough to pay for one of the twenty to thirty full time researchers that the Society funds in our area. Of course there are a lot of other services they support also. The money raised came from a variety of sources including corporate donations, individual donations gathered by participants, auction proceeds from donated items, and the entry donation. More about all that is covered in the Kick-Off meeting. In addition to fundraising, it's simply helpful to have more boats in the regatta and poker run and more people at the Leukemia Cup auction party.

If you're interested in trying to arrange a cruise to Bell Harbor the night of the Leukemia Cup I could get you in touch with the right people at the Port of Seattle.

I'm really glad to hear you are interested. Let me know what we can do!

Thanks,
Brian Watkins

Tom, that sounds really neat. No way I can make it up there, but I certainly join you in encourging any and all to give it some thought. Good fun with a better-than-normal good feeling attached.

And it leaves from your own marina! Wow! You should be in the funny papers or something.

Seriously, thanks for posting this. I think it is a wonderful idea.

Mike

I have been wanting to do this run for sometime but could not get away from my old job to do so. poker runs are a lot of fun and this one is for a good cause. This also gives me the chance to host a gathereing with out beening the host. Kind of a sub-host. They are talking about having different courses for the sail, cruise and hi speed boats with the faster boats going the longest distance. That way everyone gets done about the same time and the go fasters get to open it up a little. As I looked around the main web site link I found that there is a poker run for the Leukemia some where in the states at least once a month. So if you cant make this one look up one in your area.

this is a long time coming for a few of us. If my rememberer is right, DaveS and I had quite a conversation about this way back about the time of the first Sequim gathering. we were on the ferry comming home and were quite jacked up from such a great first gathering in Sequim and we talked about a lot of Ideas we had for upcoming gatherins.

I think that this one will be a good one to attend. I would like to try to incorporate some sort of poker run or scavenger hunt into one of our upcoming gatherings or make it a gathering of its own.I have absolutely zero time available durring spring and summer monthe for trying to host such an event , but would help where I can.

If it wasn't for wikipedia, I'd have no idea what a "poker run" is. So assuming that there are others out there like me -

From wikipedia:
"A Poker run (also known as a Poker Derby) is an organized event using a motorcycle, boat, car or other form of transportation where participants travel over a predesignated route and, at designated stops on the route, draw playing card(s). The object is to have the best poker hand at the end of the run. Prizes (usually cash prizes) are awarded for the best hand; some runs will award smaller awards for lower hands. Poker runs usually require a fee to enter; part of the fee goes to funding the event (including the prizes), while the rest goes to the event's cause (usually a charity of some sort). Specific rules and details vary, depending on the event. Moreover, each participant will be responsible to maintain the integrity of their cards during the run."

Susan has been wanting to do a scavenger hunt for a long time and we have started to do some research for one in the san juans if people are interested. We are thinking of 10 bouys with clues or 10 clues to bouys with poker cards in them. prizes to winners and bragging rights to 1st place. So what does the board think of this idea? We dont have to have all the members of a gathering to do it but we need more then a few to make it worth it.

Thanks Roger now I have some idea about what a poker run is. I always thought it was poke'er and then run! Tom, a scavenger hunt could be lots of fun so keep Susan at it. And, I'm always up for a good charity event so lets hear more about the poker run.
