September on Lake Powell...doesn't get any better. I'm thinking last two weeks of the month. By that time it has cooled off a bit...water is still warm...the summer crowds have gone home. Say meet at Wahweap around the 18th-19th? _________________ Chris

Chris,
I don't think Toni and I can make it this year. It is a perfect time to enjoy the lake though and I saw Pat Anderson was trying to get interested parties together in an earlier thread for the same time. It was a heck of a job getting the boat clean after our return last year but the trip was wonderful. _________________ RUSS & TONI |

Chris - we are THERE this year! We will have six days of travel (three days each way) and probably only one week or a little more on the lake...I think we can manage just about any dates. September 18 looks like a Thursday, so we will figure out how we want to do this......we are SO looking forward to this one! _________________

I will plan on making this one. I have only been to the south end of the lake below Dangling rope twice. There are so many things that you can do and see I think you could make hundreds of trips to this lake and never get tired of seeing it. _________________ Jody Kidd

Not posititve we can make it this year--but we will put it on the calander. Maybe we can get my son to take the boat up there--spend a week, and we will fly in and take it for another week or so...we need to do our "Powell fix" every year! _________________ Bob Austin

OK, our Stan Jones Lake Powell Map arrived yesterday! I don't know but I think the Garmin chip I got from Jody probably has Lake Powell on it (right?) Oh boy oh boy oh boy! This little map is a treasure trove of information! We are settled in now on towing Daydream with the Titan, excessive fuel costs and all, after all, it is our annual "big" vacation. Tentative schedule is to depart Fall City early Saturday morning, September 13th, overnight a couple of nights along the way (suggestions for good spots welcome from those who have done it before - we are looking at Mountain Home, ID, as a likely first stop) and arrive at Wahweap some time on Monday, September 15, get provisioned and get the boat in the water! I am sure we can occupy ourselves for a few days while others arrive on Wednesday or Thursday - then let the adventure begin! I have been studying the map, playing with Google Earth flying over Lake Powell and clicking on the photo icons, and of course admiring the pix in the albums for the prior Lake Powell CBGTs. We would need to pull out the evening of Thursday, September 25, or bright and early on the 26th - but this will give us a full 10 days of cruising. Never having been there, we are SO looking forward to this one! |

Hi Pat,
If you are camping in the boat while on land, there is a Wal-Mart at Mountain Home or a decent campground at the casino just past there. The next day would put you in the vicinity of Richfield, UT - home of Brent and Dixie. Maybe if you sweet talk them, you could put the boat in their driveway. (or if they aren't around, there's another Camp WM in town) Then it's an easy day to Lake Powell.
As an alternative: instead of getting to Lake Powell a few days before everyone else, you might consider a couple days at Flaming Gorge (on the Wyoming/Utah border)... smaller than Lake Powell, but every bit as interesting in its own way. Then shuffle off to Powell.
Fuel up in Page before you launch. You and Patty are going to have SO much fun!
Best wishes,
Jim |

Hey...Arnie... I was raised in Red Bluff... trust me there is very few places you can get from there.... I graduated from High School and went into the Navy, never to return... actually I do have a cabin in Chester but only live there in the summer..
Love the river....but there was no future for me in that town...
Heck, Go through Reno and across Nevada on 50.... should be about the most direct....
See Ya at Powell if not before...
Joel

Agree with Joel, Sparks to Ely on 50, down 50 in Utah to Holden, jump on I 15 to 70, get off 70 on exit 23 and go down 89 to Kanab and then to Page. We have done most of this--it is not a bad drive towing the C Dory 22. Some campsites along the way if you want to camp in the C Dory. |

Arnold and Marcia,
Don't mind me....I do things ass backwards most often.. But, when I drove to Lake Powell last May from Lake Tahoe, I went 95 from Fallon down towards Vegas then 15 up to 9 ( Utah ) to Kanab and 89 over to Page and launched at Wahweap. I was towing my 16'er and had an OK time but it rained and John Schuller ( Clara ) and I hung out at Bullfrog ( in the rain ) John in his BIG SWEET C-Dory 25 and me in my teeny-weeny 16'er. The other Dorys showed up later. I missed the best part of the Lake Powell experience which is the guided tour with Chirs. My oldest or first born is getting married Oct. 4th. PNW in Aug. But, if I can fit Lake Powell into the schedule in Sept. and Chris (Rana Verde)is going to show up to guide, life's too short not to do it... Right Jim? (Wildest Blue..). Last year was a mistake not to have stuck with you guys for the 4 more days. This year it's in a 19'er (Tee Ten)....So Arnold and Marcia may I follow you what ever way you go from Red Bluff I can see it now, two 19' C-Dorys in a row headed to Powell. |

Oh yeah. I'll certainly be aiming for this one. Last year was GREAT. (I've been there other times, too, in previous boating lives.) Even though I only overlapped with the group for a couple days, it was still nice to see a few other C-Dories on the water. This year I'll try to match the timing better.
I was thinking of making it two weeks this time. Great minds think alike.....

Pat
The chip does have Lake Powell on it. The Stan Jones map is amazing. He passed away last year. I think he hiked every inch of the lake. He has a book out called Stan Jones Ramblings kind of a history. There is another good book called Boaters Guide to Lake Powell by Michael R. Kelsey it breaks down each canyon and whats in them. |
