Have there only been TWO choices of engine HP for the Ranger 21 since 2000? The reason I ask is that I have seen various boats advertised for the years 2000 to 2007 with HP ratings from 20 HP to 30 HP. Could someone please clarify?
Pokey.

Pokey, When I ordered a 2006 tug there were only two options, the 20HP and 30HP. I am sure you could call the plant at (253) 839-5213 and John Livingston (owner) can answer your question. They were good to answer anytime that I called. They were one of the most customer friendly companies that I have ever dealt with. It seems that I have seen something about a 27HP at one time and it may be that Yanmar has made some engine changes in that time frame.

It may be interesting to note that, although my 2007 has a 30HP, the Coast Guard tag shows 27 HP.

The 3YM30 has a max RPM of 3600. However it is only rated for continuos use at 3489 RPM. At 3600 the motor makes 30 Hp but at 3489 RPM the motor only makes 27 Hp. Also interesting is the torque levels begin to fall after 2500 RPM from 51 lb-ft to 42 lb-ft at full throttle.

Because it's a TUG John, not an ocean racer! You'd probably be the only one to buy one and that's not enough volume. Why don't you buy one without an engine and try it yourself? That way, you'd have what you want and see how hard it was both to fit a larger engine in and then try to service it afterwards.

On the EC models made in 2006 there was a mid year change
and was a mostly smog issue. My serial number 10 had the smog
engine so the change was made prior to that. That may be the
small change in hp. The older tugs had real small engines if I
understand things correctly and like ten hp or so. I am happy
with the thirty hp size. Don't forget the first service is at 50 hours
and the number one cylinder is to the back of the boat.

I can answer your question....I have had both engines in my 21 tug...although it is a Seahorse tug...but basicly the same hull.... the two cylinder is a good little motor...and does fine...it is easier on the ears...and sips slightly less fuel....and the 3 cylinder Yanmar has more power... both motors haul the tug at hull speed just fine...about 9.5 is my top hull speed..... with the 3 cylinder QM30 Yanmar it will really try to get over hull speed....but wide open I might go about 1 more knot...so it really is not worth getting the three cylinder if all you want is speed....I needed power..as I work my tug...so the three cylinder was a great improvement... I can haul a ton of dead weight off the beach with the tug quite easily... I also have a 15" prop... so the difference is....in power..
both are good motors.. if you just want to putt...the 2 cylinder is fine...
If a 50hp. plus motor was available....it might possiblly get the boat up and plaining.... I really think it would be scarry, not for me..
