I heard some reports of tuna being caught out of Kodiak by some longliners about 600 or so miles south.
Let's see. If I take on gas in Kodiak, cruise at most efficient speed (6 mph), figure on 6 mpg average, take an extra 150 gallons of gas (towed in a dinghy) spend two weeks, it is just possible weather permitting. If we don't catch any fish Mountain House will get a little old. Probably need some water too. Or with another 200 gallons of gas, I could recover and refuel in at Midway or Honolulu. I wonder if the chart reaches that far.

I'm guessing you were fishing off the Oregon Coast? I fish halibut in Washington out of Neah Bay to Swiftsure Bank, north of Port Angeles to Victorian B.C. waters and west from Ilwaco. We also fish tuna....sometimes 30 miles out from port.... I'm considering getting a C-Dory 22 Cruiser. Is this the size boat you used? How many can you fish out of it for halibut? Our typical set up is 180 - 500 ft. deep water with spreader bars, circle hooks, 48 oz. lead cannon balls and bait. Is this what you're doing? It would be great if the C-Dory handles the typical Pacific conditions well.
Never ridden in one yet, more and more intrigued.

yes i was fishing off the Oregon Coast of Newport about 24 miles out a little closer if went out from Depoe Bay,Ocean was as good as it ever gets, ran 18 to 21knotts, except coming in on Sunday when it was pretty rough we were fishing in 600 to 739 ft of water, using 48 oz weight for the drift. tuna bellies were great for the bait, as well as black cod, salmon bellies were good too.. my little 22 ft cruiser usually works best if i fish no more than three, with a captain on the boat, excellent economy with my e-tec 90. c-dorys handle rough water excellent. and would be a great choice for you to aquire. just a great boat to have.

John...YOU DA' MAN!!!!!
Sounds like a great day of fishing. Sure enjoyed meeting you this summer at the docks (have the tan 22 out of Tigard).
Do tell us all at least the size...if you had to harpoon it then I'm guessing decent size. Any guess on weight or length?
Thanks for sharing and anxious to hear more about your catch.

Glad you had success. I was only able to get out on Sunday out of Garibaldi. The day started nice but got ugly in the afternoon. Fishing was reel slow. Not sure why it was so different out of Garibaldi compared to what the newport reports sounded like. We stayed too long. Last boat out there 24 miles feels a bit strange. Crossed a rough bar at 6pm. Thank god they didn't close it. You learn something every time out it seems. We managed two halibut. There was three of us onboard and when I tried fishing three rods we got tangled. No fun reeling up tangled lines 750 feet down so after that we only put two rods out. I'd like to know how I can avoid tangles at that depth. Maybe one rod with more weight? We were already using 46oz.
Fishing buddy with our catch. Largest was 43"

Forgot to mention that in all likely hood the Oregon, all depth halibut fishery is over. I believe we met the quota from last weekend. Probably hear something official today. |

we usually fish three out of my Dahlfin, one straight out the back and one on each side, seems to work pretty good, occasionally with fish on we might get tangled, not too often, yes halibut season is closed, it was good to me and my crew, as well as tuna, got plenty of canned tuna, now it is time to get a few good crab trips in, which i am planning on Friday out of Newport, hope to see other c-dorys in the bay, have fun and be safe |
