The trailer rolls again and it is time for a shakedown run and a bit of slime on the boat.
Anyone interested in fishing Newport and/or Depoe Bay this weekend? _________________

Ray
I plan to be in Newport this weekend doing some crabbing and clamming (minus tide). Hope to put in Friday afternoon. I'm going to spend the night on the boat, anchored up the bay somewhere. I'll keep a look out for you. Are you still moored at south beach? _________________ Terry, Ann & Chloe

I also plan to arrive Friday and will likely stay at South Beach Marina.
I was going to take the motorhome but found a leaky manifold so I am not towing with it untill I come up with enough money to fix it.
That being the case I will be staying on the boat.
I'll be monitoring VHF 16.
Hoped to see you there. |

Well, the forecast coupled with the new higher than heck gas prices added to the costs to repair the shagin wagon tow rig put the kibash on this trip. I will be ready for next week. Nothing will stop me.
Hope you have a great time out there but the period of way under 10 seconds makes me yearn fer a nap. |

We got a bucket full of clams and a few crabs. lots of boats on the water. One guy broke down a mile from the marina, towed him back to south beach. |

Awright Rock-C,
Glad you had a fun and productive weekend.
I was able to get everything together and make a short overnight trip to Coon Island. I love that place.
Are you going to make the Halibut dates?
If so I hope to meet you there as I was disapointed not to be able to meet you this week.
Good luck out there,

I sure would like to follow you or Shearwater out some day. I haven't been over the bar yet and would feel better going with someone that has.
Do you have the dates you plan to go, I'll start working on my work schedule.
Is there a web site you keep track of the predicted sea conditions? This last weekend, I played around near the end of the jetty in New Port to get a feel for how the boat behaves in swells

Terry,
Before you go all the way to the Chicken Ranch you really need to know the range of your boat and have a good feel for weather conditions, Bar conditions etc.
I would strongly recommend a couple of short trips out to say the Rock Pile (18 miles give or take) to make sure you are ready to venture all the way to the Ranch.
Of course I was gungho and went all the way my 1st time. I would say that if you know the range of your boat and you can make a 100 mile round trip (safety factor) and you can get someone with experience to go with you you should be fine.
You need to have confidence in your electronics and have a chart and compass of the area just in case.
The Pacific is not very forgiving but when conditions are right there is no place I would rather be.
Send me a PM or give me a call and we can discuss this more.
Newport is one of the more forgiving bard on the Oregon coast but there is no substitution for experience and being prepared.
Here is the link I use for weather predictions
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/Portland/
and here is another I use for tides and weather
http://www.wunderground.com/MAR/PZ/275.html
I hope this helps. I don't mean to come across as a worry wart or a safety ogre but I don't want any of my friends or associates to get in trouble out there.
Hope to talk with you soon...

Thanks Ray
I agree totally with you on the safety factor. I'm trying to take things slow and learn from those like you with more experience. The trip to Lopez was a great confidence builder, and thanks to Wade V. of Why Knot for leading the way. |
