The only way I can figure out new electronics is, Grab the manual go sit in the boat by my self and play with the new equipment. All that reading & pictures without hands on don't do a thing for me Mr. Green Beer

not marine electronics but quite similiar, you might check these folks out. At many Community Colleges you can take a class for cheap if you are a senior citizen or just wish to audit the class...check it out it wouldn't hurt to give them a call

Go to www.usps.org and find the nearest Power Squadron near you. Contact them. The United States Power Squadron has a great course on Marine Electronics, as well as other great courses.

The course is a member only course. They will gladly accept your membership. You won't regret it.

I bought a boat with a Raymarine E80 system on it and needed some instruction. I bought DVDs from Bennett Marine Video; Raymarine E Series SONAR, RADAR, and Chartplotter.

In addition to the hardware specific courses they have courses to teach you about the basics of systems like RADAR too.

I found them helpful especially if you watch them more than once and take notes. A fast finger on the PUASE and PLAY remote buttons helps.

Bennett has hundreds (maybe thousands) of titles for most brands of marine equipment.

I bought my copies through Amazon.com and got super discounted prices from a third party source.

In my opinion, a course to better understand how various pieces of marine electronics work in general is quite useful. However, if you need a course or even a long video to explain how to use a specific piece of marine electronics, that's an indication that the user interface (UI) is poorly designed (and Raymarine is a good example of a poorly designed UI).

Thanks, I'm looking more for the basics, not a specific application. Generators, batteries, shore power, grounding, battery charging, GFI's, inverters, panels, etc.

Jeff Boyer (Well known Bass Pro Fisherman) puts on a GPS/Sonar seminar several places during shows using Lowrance gear. If you have a chance to attend one of them you will learn a lot!

Jeff is a great guy (was often on the "Fishing the West" tv show) and very helpful.

Occasionally I have seen the observation here "I have radar but wished I knew how to use it better" or words to that effect. Last week I bought "Radar for Mariners", by David Burch (paperback, Indigo, $19.95). I feel it a excellent read for anyone with radar or considering installing radar on their boat.

I am sure the USPS Electronics course will be perfect for you. Go to their web site and contact a squad in your area. I am sure you will be welcomed into their squad. Power Squads have a lot of super courses that cost very little as all are run by trained members.
