That white marine construction stuff

Patty here---I am trying to buy a piece of that white marine board stuff for some accessories. I don't know what it is called. When I describe it to the 14 year old morons who work at Home Depot and Lowe's, they haven't got a clue what I'm talking about. What is it and where can I get it, PLEASE???

The stuff is called "Star Board", it is a UHMW polyethylene material with UV stabilizers in it to avoid deterioration from sunlight. It is great stuff, but heavy as hell and expensive.

Lots of Luck, you will probably not find a local dealer, but you can buy from BoatUS/West Marine also.

Patty, Home Depot does have it, not sure of the name but it's in the lumber section where they keep trim. You can buy moulding shapes and sizes up to 1x6 and 1x8. It's all together in one rack, at least it is here.

I'd be surprised if home depot carried StarBoard. They might have other plastic lumber, but I'd guess not StarBoard. You might also try www.buckwoodcraft.com. They have different sizes and colors and odd lot pieces you won't find at some of the other marine stores.

Patti, It is in Home Depot in the lumber section stacked vertically. It is used for trim. That is the stuff I used for the table between the battery boxes and the magazine rack.

The material Charlie mentioned is not Star Board, however, for narrow work and projects that will not be required to hold non-supported prolonged weight, the stuff is great. You can even heat it with a heat gun and form it to a great extent. Star Board, if I am thinking about the same material, is Ultra High Molecular Weight (UHMW) plastic. It is much more rigid than the trim at Home Depot and has a lesser expansion and contraction coefficient when subjected to variations in temperature. Hope this helps. Butch

I bought some of tis material recently and it's called "Azek", and like they say it's intended for exterior trim work. One of our local lumber yards sells it for about 2.10/LF for a 1x6. You can see it at www.azek.com/. It's not as dense or as strong as Seaboard or Starboard, but it's also not nearly as expensive and very easy to work with, and takes screws very well. It's basically PVC, and what's nice is that you can glue it with regular PVC glue. As far as I know you can't glue Starboard.

Jim, that's it. I did some research today at work and found out excactly what you just said about Star Board and the material at home depot. Both are durable, washable, and impervious to the weather. The only structrual difference is in the rigidity and expansion coefficient. PVC had a pretty significant expansion coefficient and Star Board's is approximately 1/5 of that. On very hot days you may experience a noticable "swag" in a 3' length od the HDepot trim, but not in the Star Board. That's the only thing I can see different other than the price. I use the hD trim for small stuff and it works just fine for me. Butch

You can find starboard at Boaters world they carry it, it is spendy though just bought a piece 24" x 54" was 80.00 dollars. They have several sizes I got the largest they stock.

I buy my white plastic stuff from TAP plastics. These guys know about all the stuff that you discuss (I know little). I like them because they will cut to order on the spot or by phone order. They have some shops in the Northwest as well. Type TAP plastics in a search engine or try this link.
