Just wondering if anyone has done the dirty deed of cutting into the area(s) below the v-berth, removed the floatation foam that I assume is there, and modified the area for more storage?...water tank?

Try this site, Greg boats in some of the roughest water out there and does so frequently.

If we decide to add refridgeration, I will need to add batteries. I'm wondering
if putting in some appropriate non-gassing batteries up front would work
out. I could basically cut a hole to fit...

Hi Folks,

I thought at one time that it would be good to get at the area under the forward bunks of my 1983 22' C-Dory Classic for storage. I don't think I would do more than a waterproof hatch because the area is designed to be flotation if you get swamped or what ever.

If I did it, I would have to think about replacing some of the area with flotation, and flotation some place else on the boat, like under the side deck in the cockpit, and, in my case, aft of the fuel tanks.

To just cut the area without thinking about the flotation might be a big mistake.

If I did cut it, I would use it for dead storage like caned goods, not gas or water tanks.

Fred

Thanks for the replies! After some thought, and "if" I end up doing this, I might simply remove enough foam to install hatches with liners, to retain the watertightness, yet allow for small storage areas.

No foam in my 85 classic. I installed a 6" screwed water tight hatch. Good place to hide your money. Laughing C-Otter[/b][/i]

I divided the under berth area into three large storage compartments on our 1984 22' Angler. Each had a 16" x 18" access hatch, using the original deck material. I just glassed in 1" x 2" wood pieces to hold up the hatches (like in the present day TomCat's). I made plywood dividers and then fully glasses them on both sides, and tabbed them to the hull with glass. The result was three watertight compartments, and a lot of storage. In the older C-Dories the under berth area is not filled with foam, but just a single compartment. I have looked for pic's but nothing yet. We sold the boat in 2004.
