I got my new trim motor for one of the Honda 45's today. Removing the bad motor was interesting. All 4 bolts were the metric version of 1/4-20 bolts with a phillips head. None would budge with a screwdriver, even when helped with a pair of vice grips. ALL of them broke off! I soaked the remains in penetrating oil, then tried to twist them out via vice grips, they all broke again. So...I welded nuts to the remains, hoping that the heat would soften them up....nope...twisted off flush this time. So I drilled them and proceeded to break 2 easy-outs! Drilled them a second time to 7/32" which all but removed any remains of the bolts, then tapped the holes to a true 1/4-20 and installed the new motor with hex head bolts.
So far so good....but if they pose any more trouble...I'll be using the entire housing to test those .223 armor piercing rounds that I've been saving for such an occassion! _________________ Snal~

Don't ya just love it when you break an EZ out? That sucks. I'd say you have the equipment to handle anything, though.
BTW...if those .223's don't penetrate well enough, maybe my .416 Rigby will do the trick...400gr Barnes Super Solid...no problem! _________________ "Life's too short to hunt with an ugly gun"

I went through a similar experience when I broke a bolt on the flywheel cover of my sled. Then I broke off an ez-out. Too hard to drill. I ended up @ an Automotive Machine Shop that had an EDM (Electrical Discharge Machine). Watching that bolt get vaporized was sweet revenge. _________________ Pete

This is the first time I have heard of EDM. I try to learn something new every day and EDM is todays new thing. Sounds like it could be expensive. Is it? Although I guess if it is the only way to fix a problem, it would be worth it.

That .416 would likely do a number on me too! Never shot won, but I heard one go "bang" once...and my shoulder hurt!... I'm a Ruger freak, and a cowboy at heart, Vaqueros and Blackhawks outnumber my lever guns 3 to 1. |

Dave,
EDM has been around a long time. Ever hear of Mag-Na-Port? If not, they are a custom gunshop. They EDM slots in the muzzles of gun barrels to reduce muzzle jump. Check out the stuff they do...
http://www.magnaport.com/
Larry Kelly, the founder, was working on parts for the space program using EDM...figured he could do some cool gun stuff as a hobby...and the rest is history. We became friends with the folks there when I was stationed in Detroit...nice people who do some really cool stuff.
Snal....if you like the .416, then you'd LOVE my .500 Nitro Express.
Both in Number 1's...

Well this next tidbit is sure to raise eyebrows and create skepticism!
"I can DRILL out broken easy outs as well as broken Taps!!!"
Maybe we should have a "How Day Do Dat" section?
Then mortals could learn something!
