Warren-

The rails can be simply spiral wrapped with this kind of end fitting knob:

This knot is called an oarcollar.

I have looked into adding 4 inches to the starboard side of the boat walk area above the rub rail. Big deal if my boat is now 8 foot 10 wide!

Alasgun,

You know there are plans for houseboats that have folding side decks for extra walkway, but fold up for trailering...

Now that I have seen what you are talking about I realized that I have a book that shows how to tie some elementary patterns. Not sure how you would keep the entire pattern from sliding on the SS, though.

Thanks!
Warren

I'd guess there would be an adhesive that could be applied as it was wound that would bond it to the stainless rail after the rail was wiped down with laquer thinner to remove any oily or other residue.

Any adhesive used for this job would need to be UV resistant as well.

One could consult with some companies (like 3M, Loctite, Dupont, etc.) about the choice of adhesives. One could also find someone still doing this work on fishing rods, and find out how they proceed and what they use.

Ashley's book of knots is one of the best souces of sailors art knots and decrative knots. On wood, one can tie these knots tight enough that they don't slip. I have done some on SS wheels and used a specialized silicone adhesive. Be sure that you use a rope which will not weather or be degraded by UV. When wrapping, as long as you secure the ends, the middle will not slip--assuming it is tight.

The problem I see is keeping the wraping clean. It can be done, but gets away from the simple functionality of SS.

Thanks, Joe and Bob. There's always a downside, no?

Well Warren,

You could always use that stretch wrapping that they use on motorcycle and bicycle handlebars.

Here are photos of the two railings I put on each side of the CD 25 cabin top. This perticular boat, the core comes all of the way to the edge where the lip turns over. It is a bear getting the nuts on the ends of the bolts. I used museum putty to hold the nut on the end of my finger and hole it in place--the museum putty held the washer in place until the nut was on. The aft foreward railing was too tight, so I put a "gob" of stick epoxy and formed it around the shaft of the bolt from the railing:
