Fuel Consumption Rate

I just purchased a 25 foot 2005 C-Dory last week which has twin honda 90s which are fuel injected and in nearly new condition (50 hours on each engine and recently completely serviced). I have no idea how much fuel she consumes. I hope someone can give me some general consumption guidelines at various RPMs.

You will also get some answers here on this thread, of course, but since boats, loading, motors, props, and so forth also vary quite a bit, the best way for you to get REAL figures for YOUR boat is to get a fuel flow meter or management system.

Such a system gives you instantaneous consumption rates (mpg and gph), and also allows you to monitor your remaining fuel volume and range in distance.

One of these systems will also allow you to fine tune the motor and trim tab trim for maximmum mileage, as well as make loading/balance adjustments that affect your boat trim and mileage.

Steve, I would look at those Honda tests with a bit of skepticism. The "Tests" always get much better mileage than real life conditions. The boats are new, are very lightly loaded. Generally the "mileage" is in the 2.2 to 2.5 miles a gallon--more at displacement speeds.

Since the injected 90's are new engines (boat show this last year I believe)--it would suggest that these are not the origional engines on your boat.

I don't know if twin 90's will get better mileage than a single 135 or 150 Honda, which is the "usual" engine on these boats. There are lots of variables.

I strongly suggest that you put in fuel flow management systems. You might consider the Honda, or put in the Lowrance with either 2" or 4" read out, or Navman/Northstar. I have used both of the latter and they work quite well, cost will be in the couple of hundred of dollars, and in the long run they will save you that much in fuel costs. You will find out instantly what trim, different speed, motor angle, etc will do to the fuel consumption and find the most economical speeds. It is a real eye opener that a few degrees of motor trim or trim tabs may make over 10% difference in the fuel consumption.

I get about 3.5 NM/gal on the 25 with a Honda 150. It is very consistant.

Steve, you didn't mention the loading you have or the props for a relative comparison.

I don't have the newer 90s, but I get around 3.4 NM/G with a heavy load[marine a/c & lots of extra safety stuff]. I've got the HONDA 15" pitch , SS 4 blades.

If you can find it in your budget, you will not be dissapointed with a fuel management system. I sure have not; especially for all the previous reasons already given by thataway.

By the way I just happen to have a set of 4 blade 17 pitch ss props for a 90 hp. Got them a a swap meet and its to must pitch for the 22. came off a cat. new they are 250 each.? make a offer.
