Hello all,
Just wondering if anyone else besides the Double D's fishes for Salmon off the mouth of the Columbia?
It would seem that boats like ours were made for such a place but hardly ever see a post about anyone fishing there.
We have the pleasure of educating prospective C-Dory buyers/admirers the positive qualities of our great vessels almost every trip (especially at the gas pump)
Safe boaing to all
Dale & Dolores

I venture out there once in a while. The conditions and timing have to be real good for me, but it is a blast when I go. I don't even have my boat floating yet for this season, but the ocean has been not worth the price of gas to get to it on the few occasions I could have gone this past month. I'll probably give them fishys a week or two to swim a little closer to Warrenton and make the outside trip on perfect days. _________________ TyBoo Mike

Hey Mike,
We've always kept an eye out for you. (we don't believe what the others say)
Dolores and I have fished the ocean 8 times so far this month from Astoria with good success.
Not many Chinook so far but the Coho are plentiful.
Hope to meet you one day.
Dale

I'm easy to spot. The big Garmin radome looks sorta like the Starship Enterprise sitting up there.
I might get out on the water Sunday. The swell and wind waves are predicted to be greater than the period so I doubt I'll go outside, but I can pretend to fish the river just to get a feel for it. Friday is a birthday party for Jamie's 11th, and there will be 397 (it will seem like it) little girls staying the night so Saturday is out.
I think this next weekend is the CR leg of the tuna tournament so if the bar is crossable there will be a lot of boat wakes just outside the jetties early in the morning.
Didn't I catch a glimpse of you on the river during sturgeon season? |

Dale,
We take Traveler out as often as we can. We leave it in Chinook for most of the summer and fish most every Friday and Saturday when the weather conditions and family doesn't get in the way.
We have been going out to the CR buoy and trolling south or west. Last Friday we limited 3 poles in 4 hours using 14 gallons of fuel, Saturday limited 4 poles in 2 hours using 13 gallons of fuel, and Sunday limited 4 poles in one hour using 12 gallons of fuel. The Honda 150 has been so good on fuel at low speeds that I haven't used the 15 hp kicker yet, but I will have to try it just to see if there are some savings.
The marine forcast looks like winds up to 25 knots for this weekend so we might have to stay back and play cards. I will be looking for you out there, I monitor 16,22, and 68, give me a call. _________________ RUSS & TONI |

Looking forward to seeing you on the water Mike & Russ.
We have the boat moored in Astoria until around the end of August then will bring her home to Kalama.
We won't make it down this weekend but will shoot for the weekend after that.
Good fishing.

Finally made it away from the dock this morning. Smooth all the way out to the CR at 8:00 and got better by 10:30 when I came back in. This was the first time I ventured out there with no one else on board. It was peaceful and relaxing until time to start fishing. I hooked better than a dozen fish. The first one was a barely legal chinook that I let go and the rest were also little guys. I kept one coho that was probably 4 pounds at best, and then started fishing deeper and deeper trying for a chinook. Ended up keeping another coho about the same size because he was hooked deep and bleeding.
I hooked at least one fish on every combination of gear I tried, but the quickest catcher was a purple and pink (I think) hootchie with a single hook and a small chunk of herring. B~C left that rig on my boat a couple years back with a label claiming it to be lucky and made by slave labor in LaCenter. I'll be rigging up a few spares myself since B~C freed his slave and skipped the country.
Saw Traveler travelling around out there. He stopped by to say hi and said they had one fish on board about 10 pounds. They were heading to the north to try to get away from the jacks. |
