Lopez Island, in the San Juans, is having a gala week-long art fest, June 30-July 7th. Tuesday afternoon is a jazz concert and on Wednesday, the Fourth, there will be a parade, a slamon barbeque, and marvelous fireworks display (although not as huge as Wrangell AK). We anchor at the head of Fisherman's Bay and watch the blasts overhead. It is a fine front seat. Several years ago, we watched the sparks land in the driftwood along the shore, start a conflagration, and almost burn down a few houses -- now THAT was a display!!. This might be the start of a C-Brat 4th of July celebration in the San Juans, eh? If interested, check out:

El & Bill
On the 1st, I'll be catching a salmon charter out of Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. From there Lucky and I will spend the week at Fort Casey on Whidbey Island to attend a family reunion.
I debated weather or not to bring the boat and extend our vacation so we could cruise the San Juans but decided to save the vacation time for two weeks R&R at Lake Mohave in September. Now I kind of regret that decision. |

Seems like most folks have other plans for the 4th -- like a Salmon Charter or a clam bake in Galveston -- but, just a reminder, Fisherman Bay at Lopez is a mighty fine venue for the fourth -- you sit on the bow (or anchor stern to, and sit on the comfy chairs in the cockpit) and watch the show over the harbor. We plan to be there, and look forward to seeing any others who can make it. |

El and Bill, we are planning to drive over to join you (and meet you, if we haven't already at the 06 SBS -- I'm not good at remembering people I've only met once!)

El and Bill,
I take it you are just anchoring out on the fourth? I've got a spot in Friday Harbor for the 5th, 6th and 7th, but the 2nd through the 4th was, as expected, booked solid up in the San Juans.
We've only had the boat 2 months and my littlest RubBrat is 2 years old. I'm not sure we're ready to just "sit on the hook" for a few days.
I have to admit that I've called and pestered every marina in the San Juans (politely, of course) asking if they have cancellations. They've all been extremely pleasant, which only makes my desire to be up there all of this coming week even more!!!
Enjoy and hopefully our paths will cross and we can exchange investment advice amongst other things _________________ -Sarge

El & Bill,
Would love to be there but we have a date with crab pots down in Holmes Harbor. We may stay on our mooring there for the fireworks but will probably go ashore afterwards to make sure the Dawgs are OK.

With our "little" 19 - the harbormaster at Friday Harbor told us "Heck, even on the 4th of July we'll have room for you." I think the reservations fill up fast - but they still have open space for drop-ins?

El and Bill,
Have not been to Lopez yet (shame, shame!) Will I be able to tie up somewhere for a few hours for the salmon BBQ and all the rest, before going out to Fisherman's Bay for the night?
We just bought a dinghy (our first) and would prefer not to use it for this trip until we have spent some time learning how to use it.
Thanks,
Warren |

Quick update:
We found a place at the Blakely Island Marina! We'll be up there the 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
Never having been to Blakely Island, I understand that it is a private island so we're limited to the marina grounds with the kids. It is my plan at this present time to ship out each morning and visit some of the surrounding islands. I really hope to meet you two, El and Bill, and Warren also while we're up there.
I have the same question as Warren, although I've been to Lopez Islander before, do you think we'll be able to find temporary dock moorage during the day in Fisherman's Bay? I'm new to the whole anchorage/dinghy thingy.
This really is an adventure for us...the two little RugBrats and the Mrs. and I on the boat for 6 straight nights. This will either be the begging of something great, or someone will get a great deal on a slightly used CD25! |

Hi Sarge,
We are fairly new to the CD-22 and have the last half of the 4th week off and have been loooking around for a short week trip too. Would love to make the Islands for the Fireworks and even more to meet up with some more C-Dory family. We are, at this point, wishing for the amenities of the CD25 over the 22, (shower - me, and onboard head - wife) which would make anchoring out so much more pleasant. So if GiGi is looking for a new home soon, (and for your and my sake I hope not) let me know, mabe we can work out a deal to save both of us .
Harvey

Looks like we won't be at Lopez for the 4th after all. My wife is leaving early on the 5th for a trip to MN so it's not going to work out for us. Rats!

About tying off at Lopez -- they usually have temporary dock for trip to shore, but on the 4th I doubt there will be any space. Best idea will probably be to anchor out and dinghy ashore.
Sarge -- what time do you plan to arrive at Blakely tomorrow? - roughly. We are anchored in Pleasant Bay, in the Chuckanut just outside Bellingham. Might be able to meet you in Blakely tomorrow while we are en route to Lopez. We will pm our cell phone #, so give a call if the VHF doesn't reach us. We are with Daydream.
We'll look for the Sleepy C in Lopez on the 4th.
Tom and Shan -- are you thinking of coming to Lopez evening of the 4th or just stay put in Friday Harbor?
Anyone coming into Lopez -- pay strict attention to the buoys and chart coming into Fisherman Bay. It's a narrow, but deep enough channel, and there are some interesting twists -- especially the last mark!! Don't take any short cuts if visiting at low tide. Roughly mid-day tomorrow.
Looking forward to our mini-Gathering. |

El and Bill,
My guesstimate is that we'll arrive at Blakely Island Marina around 5 pm. We're leaving Edmonds around 10 am and plan on going through Swinomish Channel on the way up. Might need to stop at LaConner to appease the crew so it won't mutiny. Not like the 'good ole days' when you could fill'em full of cough syrup like Dr. Smith "the Baby Doctor" use to advise on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
I'll share my cell number as well in a PM.
Hope to see you tomorrow! |

Swinomish Channel, if you are not familiar with it, can run a pretty good tide. No problem with our power boats, but sometimes a little tricky tying off in LaConner. The low today will be about 1330 on a negative 2.2 foot tide, so might time about then for slack water to make tying easier, or head to Anacortes where there should be no problem.
Have a great trip. Our plans aren't fixed, so will call and see how things look.
