Had a chance today to try out an Ace Pot Puller on a friends boat for pulling crab pots at 150ft.

http://www.johnssportinggoods.com/Ace%20Pictures.htm

He has also used it for shrimp pots.

Seemed to work well and I like the idea that it fits to a Scotty base which many of us have.

Came away convinced I needed one then I looked at the price and mentally divided that by the number of crab.............

This is how I mounted the Ace Line Hauler on our TomCat 24. I have since transfered it to Discovery, with a similar mount and location. I added a 12" section to the Line Hauler Boom, gets it out and away from the side. No more dragging the prawn traps up the side of the boat. We prawn with 48" diameter traps.

Brent,

Will that plug into a Scotty downrigger socket? Looks like a simular plug.
How fast does that pull- all we can use here are the open hoop nets, no traps for recreational crabbing or lobstering. We can use traps for shrimp- no larger than 1/2" opening- makes for shrimpy shrimp. Rolling Eyes

Roger,

The plug is a Scotty type. I have a socket on each side of the cockpit. Also use them for the Scotty 1106 downriggers.

I think the Ace Line Hauler has a speed of 100 feet/min. Don't think it's fast enough to use with hoop type traps. I always pulled them (hoop rings) as fast as I could, by hand. Hoping to keep the crabs from jumping off. However, the largest Dungeness I ever caught came up on top of a prawn trap from 300' deep. Caught it with a dip net at the surface.

I just bought one at the swap meet for 300 and can't wait to use it. the older models were 100 ft per minute but the newer models are 115 ft per min. I also have 4 or 5 shrimp pots that Iam not using and would like to sell. new they are $65 I will let these go for 40 each or 35 each if you buy all of them. Two have never been used. I changeing over to fold up traps for traveling.

Tom,

Are the new traps ur changing to from a guy at SBS? I saw some really cool shrimp/crab pots that fold down, but srang into position when ready to use. Have been thinking of them since but can't remember the name or how to get ahold of them.

That pot is really cool looking and a nice size folded up or deployed, BUT its $169 buck. Thats a lot for a crab pot.
