Hi, I'm new to the C-Dory neighborhood and am looking for my first C-Dory! I'm hoping to find the right 22' Cruiser and I have been doing some research. I read that there's a big difference in the safety and interior quietness between the earlier models that didn't have the foam injected in the hull, and the later ones that did. Is this really the case, and was it a specific year cutoff that they switched the design? If it was mid-year, is there a way I can tell the difference?

Thanks for any info, I want to make an informed decision when buying my first Dory! Smile

Take care,
Beartrack

I do not remember any flotation foam, either injected or preformed foam in my 2003 22. My 1989 16 has foam under each gunnel and at the bow.

The following comes from:

www.uscgboating.org/safety/boatbuilder/flotation/intro.htm

Quote:
Monohull boats under 20 feet in length and rated for more than two horsepower must comply with the more sophisticated flotation system called Level Flotation. The Level Flotation system requires that the swamped boat, loaded with certain weights representing weight capacity, part of persons capacity and some equipment, must float in an approximately level position and not heel past a certain angle, even when part of the passengers’ weight is on one side of the passenger carrying area.

My 2003 has foam in the bow. Just pull the inspection cover in the bow on a 22.

Our 2002 22 cruiser has foam under the V berth and associated liner.
I tried to remove the inspect port, and found it quite difficult because
the foam attached itself to the inspection port. No big deal, but if you
can't remove the port, that may be why.

I'm going to guess that if there is no access under the V berth cushions,
the area is probably filled. But that is just a guess!

How about the older boats? I don't have an inspection port but would like to use some space under the V-Berths. Is there foam in a 1994 22 Cruiser? Inquiring minds want to know.... I do too!

My 1992 C D cruiser 22' had foam under the foreward v bunk (no tanks).
My CD 25--2003 has a water tank and foam under all of the V bunk area.
I assumed that most of the boats had foam, unless they were removed, or in the Tom Cat 255 series. I would not base my decision to buy a boat based on if there was foam there or not. My CD 25 still is plenty noisy powering into 2 to 3 foot seas....

My 2000 has no inspection port. Not sure if it has foam or air or water?...

What location did the factory choose to install inspection ports on the CD22?

Evidently these boats are standard as a snowflake, but my inspection port is in the floorboard in the v-berth. My watertank is under the rear seat (opposite the stove).

The port is under the porta-potti. I wonder if its function is not so much
an inspection port but rather a way to inject the foam and easily close up
the hole? In my case, the foam stuck to the port, and I had to remove the
screws and pry it off. I mostly wanted to make sure there were no water
intrusions issues like some C-Dory owners have reported (water moving from
the anchor locker into the foam.) We were good to go.

I'm betting you're right. I filled what little space was there with salt, it's a trick I learned from the WWII guys -- if water does get in and you don't catch it, the salt will pickle the water and pickle the wood instead of rot it right away.

My 2007 CD25 has its water tank in the stern between the batteries almost touching the transom.

I wear glasses, which might explain things, but I haven't seen an inspection port in the v-berth. I've never removed the cushions.

I wouldn't try drinking the water out of that tank on my CD25. Its the holding tank! Shocked
My water tank is under the V=Berth and I just cut a hole to put in a round hatch with a clear cover that will let me see the water level without opening the hatch.

Ron, I assume that your water tank is under the V berth on the port side.
Good idea to put in the clear inspection plate.

I have a 35 gallon water bladder tank for longer trips where water might be a problem, which will fit on the floor between the two "V" berths--or could be put in other places

Not sure when the holding tank was moved--but all of the 2003 and 2004 CD 25's have the holding tank aft--where the water tank is currently.

The newer boats use the sea land holding tank (about 10 gallons) built into the base of the head.

Ron - could you post a pic of this inspection hatch & its location? I would really like to be able to see the water level in the tank!
