Penny and I plan to arrive in Stonington Me. on July 8th towing Wanderer behind our RV. We have reserved a campsite and mooring for about 10 days.

We expect to spend most days exploring the nearby islands, coastline and villages aboard Wanderer and returning to the RV at night. After the 10 days, we may put the RV in storage and range farther along the coast.

We have cruised this coast several times in our sailboat. Our intent for this trip is to work our way inland aboard Wanderer. No end date has been set.

We’d love to rendezvous with any C-Brats on the coast in July.

Hey George & Penny! Great to see you posting again. We missed you on this years Cumberland River Cruise. Not sure if you are in MD or FL...or somewhere in between....but Sherryl and I are just outside of Nashville again. Do give us a shout when passing thru this way. Our home is always open to the two of you for sure. We'd love seeing you again....

We'd love to meet up with you in July. Our boat goes in next week. We are in Brooksville just a few miles from Stonington. Keep us posted on your plans.

Hi George & Penny,

We'd like to get down there to meet you guys during your Down East Cruise. It's a 2 1/2-3 hr trailer ride for us to Rockland, Penobscot Bay ( nearly 5 hr to Stonington). So, we'd like you to keep us posted on your plans, too. Especially, if you decide to cruise east of Stonington. I haven't taken Hunky Dory east of Stonington, yet, and I was hoping to do so this summer.

Hi George and Penny, and Rick and Carol,

We will be in Maine at our place near Ellsworth sometime in July. Not sure exactly when yet, but our two weeks up there could very well coincide with your wandering. We may not have "Crescent Girl" with us since we are having some work done on the cabin this year, but would love to get together with you one way or the other.

Rick, maybe you & Carol could come to our place with Hunky Dory and have a place to park and launch and stay. That way we could hitch a ride with you to cruise with George and Penny and others who may join us. The trip from our place to Deer Isle (Stonington) is only about an hour by water.

We'll firm up our plans soon, and you guys can keep us posted as to your plans.

George, are you planning on going to Moosehead Lake, or stay Down East?

Hi Dun,

Sounds like a good plan to us. Hope the timing works such that we can all make it together.

Arrow Patrick,
We missed being with you this spring. The Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers and the lakes they hold make a wonderful cruising ground. Combined with that exemplary Byrd hospitality and your personal exuberance it is not an event to be missed. Our regards to your family. Maybe next time…

Arrow Tom and Leslie,
If we develop them, we will post more concrete plans here. Hopefully, we can meet, perhaps cruise some together.

Arrow Rick and Carol,
We will keep you posted. Yes, we plan to go at least as far as the eastern side of the Schoodic Peninsula. Beyond that I have not yet ventured nor have I done my homework.

Arrow Dun,
It would be fun to see you and Becky again. Will you travel to Ellsworth in your RV? We had not planned on seeing Moosehead Lake. Should we?

We are giving thought to traveling from Maine to some place on a loop which includes the Rideau, the Trent-Severn, Georgian Bay and the North Channel of Lake Huron. If we put that together for this year, we may go from Maine to begin the loop or we may go home first. We are mindful of the Rideau Canal Gathering and will attend if we get it together for that time frame.

I may start a thread to see if anyone is interested in the loop. We have ordered charts and guides to obtain a reality check.

Arrow All,
Again, we’d also love to have company for some or all of the loop outing.

We are considering the purchase of a data card to get on the internet while in Maine. How good is the digital phone coverage in the harbors along the coast?

Anyone know what the coverage is like along the loop mentioned above?

If you would like our cell phone number, drop us a PM. You might include your phone number.

To all potential cruisers of the Mt. Desert Is. area in July, let me offer an invitation to make use of our cottage as a potential gather place and/or overnight stop over. Valerie will be there most all of July and I will be there 7/4-9, 7/13-17, 7/20-24. Widget will have a mooring in Bunker's Cove of Stave Island Harbor and we will all have use of a private float/warf next to the public ramp. Our cottage is a short walk from the cove area and there is some parking at the ramp for trailers and also at our place. The cove is a "working waterfront" (read primarily fisherman who are barely tolerant of pleasure boats). We just brought Widget here last season and had to ply the tide with the ramp and so have a limited personal knowlege of Frenchman Bay.
We have Cingular (AT&T) primarily because they have the most consistent coverage Downeast (still somewhat spotty) and we have an aircard for the laptop that works as long as ther is cell signal. Frenchman Bay has good coverage related to a tower at Bar Harbor and a tower on Schoodic Penninsula.
Hope we can have a good gathering.
Dave

Dave,

What a nice offer. We will try hard to take advantage of it. Our plans have not progressed beyond those expressed in our first post. When I get a chance, I’ll start putting together a list of harbors we’d like to visit. Bunker’s Cove will surely be one stop. For us, Penobscot, Blue Hill and Frenchman Bays embody the magic of Down East cruising. We’d like to see your wish list of places to visit.

In a PM, Dun suggested that you love to cruise Moosehead Lake. We'll have to hear more about it.

In Preview mode, my signature shows up. However, I don't see it on my two previous posts here.

Anyone know what is wrong?

Your sig only appears on the first message you write in the current thread.
Or perhaps first on the page.

Mike,

Thanks for the info.

One can always add his own signature later in the thread.

That's what I did below-to see how it works

Our plans are about the same as originally posted. We will leave Annapolis on the morning of July 5th and head for Maine towing Wanderer behind our RV.

July 5: Promised Land SP east of Scranton, PA
July 6:Wells State Park, MA - Rt 49 Strubridge, MA
July 7: Point Sebago, ME
July 8-16: Stonington, ME - with day trips on Wanderer.

If you have any thoughts on a time and place to get together, lets hear them.

Send us your cell phone number by PM and we will respond. I don't know what the communications will be like in Stonington but we will try to make contact.

I have a very large mooring in Smith's Cove capable of holding a raft up of C-Dory's (my boat displaces 75,000 lbs). It has a 10,000 lb granite rock with 3/4" brand new chain. I'm interested in getting a C-Dory or C-Ranger and would love to host an afternoon/overnight gathering so I can selfishly see some real ones!

Tom and Leslie are right around the corner.

If you'd like to come out to Castine, please let me know. Castine has a nice town dock with a small market 1/2 block away. There are a variety of restaurants, historic homes, etc. and a walking tour map at the harbormaster office.

My empty mooring is just about where the "Smith's Cove" anchorage is shown in:
http://www.activecaptain.com/OTW.php?lat=44.36319&lon=-68.77123&zoom=6

It is labeled "aCappella".

We have a mooring in the south end of Smith Cove, and would be glad to help host a C-Dory gathering here.
