Just a quick heads up for those of you planning a boating visit to the Seattle area. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced the closure of the small lock in Ballard for it's annual maintenance. Closure dates this year are March 8th (6:30 am) through March 19th (4pm).

Despite what you may have heard from Les, this closure is NOT due to Chivita trashing the locks.

Large lock will remain open but don't forget the 50' lines and fenders (preferably ones you don't mind scuffing up) if your going through that one!

Who the cripe is Hiram M. Chittenden, and what did he do to get a barge canal named after him? And what's this I hear about Chivita tearing up poor old Hiram's locks?

Good questions, both. First one, follow this link:
Ol' Hiram
Don't know about Chivita - the only thing I could find was in Espanish, which I don't speak, but hey, who knows, maybe it IS about tearing up the locks...I do hope it is not a porn site or anything offensive!

Pat,

Great find! Your Chivita link is a story about a mischevious young goat (Chivita in spanish) that eats a man's gold coin. He feeds the goat some good old laxative to help recover his prized possesion and waits for the results. Unfortunately the goat's stomach reduces his coin into little pieces. He must follow the dang thing around while it deposits his pieces of gold all over the yard! My wife, who's nickname has been Chivita since she was a little girl absolutely loved your story, gee I wonder why?!

This is how how read it, Pat. I bet poor old Hiram is turning over in his grave.

THE CHIVITA OF THE UNCLE PANCHO. ..?

Once uncle Pancho raised a chivita that a friend gave it and lavished it many cares and affection. But in an occasion the chivita resolved to be swallowed a "morocota" (currency of gold of the size of a strong one), which caused a great deal of displeasure al uncle Pancho that immediately proceeded to give him a purgante and enclosing it in a small room and al following day for its surprise, found in the floor many pepitas of gold that had evacuated the chivita. It counted the friends it happened, who they said that better to have been killing it and to recover the "morocota" complete, to which responded uncle Pancho that as itself crime occurred them so, if since that day put it for name "the chivita of the pepitas of gold" and that every day of the year al to be raised was going to continue collecting them and of that way was done very rich.

Well all right! That is a cool story! Dave - glad Chivita liked it, even if I had NO idea whatsoever what it was! Mike - if you ever want to find out a short bio of some dead guy, the grave site is usually a good choice!
