Blakely and beyond was great this year! We went up early and stayed the first two nights at Deception Pass, with the better part of the second day in La Conner. Thursday, we went over to Blakely to meet all the nice people and see all the nice whales on the Saturday cruise. All of us had a blast. A special thanks to all for making it so special for the kids.
Sunday morning, we left Blakely with Knot Yacht and Helen O and headed up to Sucia. About half way there, one blade of my Honda prop busted clean off for no apparent reason. We used the kicker to get to a nearby private dock and swapped to the larger pitched spare. We were stuck in high gear, but still got to Sucia with no problems. There I put on the stainless prop that was stowed on the boat, and it turned out to be perfect. Still using it.
Monday, the Knot Yacht crew headed back toward home, and we went with Helen O over to Stuart Island and stayed the night. Everywhere we went we got dock space when big boats pulled out just as we got there. Like we planned it, or something. Very lucky, because there were lots of folks looking to tie up.
Tuesday, the kids finally talked us into going to Fisherman's Bay where the swimming pool is. For two nights, no less. Fred and Robbin joined us the first night with Anita Marie. Fred even took care of the slip reservations for us. Wednesday, it was over to Friday Harbor for the girls to go shopping and wandering, then back to Lopez.
Thursday, Helen O and us reversed course and ran up to Doe Island where we had the dock and the island to ourselves. We did have a short visit with The Lynn Marie crew (they even brought Fred with them!) when they honored our request to bring a bit of beer up from Blakely. There were plenty of boats wanting our dock space, so we didn't want to leave. Another neat thing that happened at Doe Island was getting to meet Helesh, who was down from Lake Powell on a kayak excursion. He just happend to recognize the boat name when he passed the back side of the island and stopped by to introduce himself. Neat.
The next morning, Rosario was flat and still, so we shot down to Deception Pass in no time. We got to visit with Tim and Judy again after they loaded the Lynn Marie on the trailer. Tied up there for Friday night (after another visit to La Conner), and Larry and I loaded our boats the next morning.
Then it was back on the road headed for home. I missed one turnoff, and Larry followed right along. Oops. If he would have just followed us through one more parking lot turnaround instead of giving up and heading for the freeway, he and Helen could have had the fresh Krispy Kremes with us. But, that was the last time we saw them.
We got back home without any trouble (except for freeway construction and car-wreck traffic jams around Seattle).
Now I'm back to work. Bummer.
Thanks again to all for everything. _________________ TyBoo Mike

Hi all
This is Dave from NH. I am finally back home, with a quick four day drive across the country. It was great to have a chance to join you all on Friday, and to put faces with names I see here.
I knew I had it good when sitting on the dock visiting, someone (sorry, I can't remember) brought me two halves of crab, which I spent the next hour eating, along with the Beer Guys' beer. I couldn't have happened into a nicer bunch of folks, and really appreciated it.
I left in the morning to head down to Edmonds, and then to Port Townsend. These were the first few hours on my boat, and they were great. At this point I like it better each chance I have to try it out.
On my way home I had a brief chance to put the boat in the Mississippi. I met a guy at the last Iowa rest stop who lived on the river just upstream from the bridge, who works for the Army Corps of Engineers, who was interested in the boat, and showed me where the ramp was, and he and his wife went up the river with me. Then pulled it out and drove another hundred miles.
I am grateful for the chance to cruise a little in the Seattle waters, and for you folks, for bringing me up to Blakely.

Hi Dave ,
Great to hear you had both a good time out here and a good drive back home. It's pretty neat that an upper right edger could, and would, make the trip out to pick up a boat and co-mingle with us upper left edge folks. You're also right about those Washington cruising waters. Us Oregonians are a little jealous.
Keep us posted and don't be affraid to come back when it's time to service those motors.

Hi, Dave. Glad to hear you made it home safely. Maybe in five or so years you'll be out here with your daughters, routinely cruising with us west siders. |

Dave,
Glad you got home safely. It was great to have met you at Blakely. I didn['t realize you were leaving Sat morning. Had a case of beer and 6 more fresh crab for your trip. So we drank and ate it Saturday. _________________ David and Kate

Robbin and I returned today from our 2 plus weeks in San Juans/Gulf Islands. What a great time at Blakely. All the usual kudos to everyone. Picked up Robbin Sunday afternoon and headed out again. We spent a day on the hook in Parks Bay, a day with the Tyboo crew and Helen and Larry at Fishermans Bay. Another couple of days at Blakely fishing with Tim and Judy.
We then headed to the Gulf Islands, Customs at Bedwell Harbor, then on to Montague Harbor and the Pub Bus to the Hummingbird Pub. Robbin wasn't sure what she was in for but in the end had a great time. The next morning I paddled over to the bakery barge that was in the harbor and got fresh bread and rolls for breakfest, really cool. It is a converted 3 car ferry. Next Conover Cove on Wallace Island, beutiful but really hot that day. We then headed to Thetis Island for the night and took the ferry over to Chemanius an artsy old logging town. It was again very hot setting records in Victoria.
We then planned on going on to Pirates Cove the next day but Stuart Channel had 25 Knot winds and 6 foot waves so we decided to head back to Conover Cove for the night. It was a wild ride down to Wallace Island but we were able to get on the dock. Headed south the next day to Otter Bay on North Pender Island on a recommendation from some Canadians. This marina is a gem, it should be seriously considered for a gathering sometime. We liked it so much that we stayed another day.
We then headed back to the states. Went thru Customs at Roche Harbor and then headed to Reid Harbor on Stuart Island. Spent the next three days hiking and kayaking at Stuart and then returned home this afternoon. If we were not hooked on this lifestyle before we sure are now.
Thanks again to all the C-Brats for the freindship and community.

Hey Brock, I ran into a guy at Reid Harbor in a 30' Catalina who was talking about selling his boat and getting a C-Dory. His main reason for doing this was he ran into this guy at Powell River in a 16 footer who was zipping around the area. He was so impressed that he has wanted one ever since. His name was Jim S???? and he mentioned you by name. I reluctently let him know I knew you. His wife seemed bored to death as we talked about C-Dorys, Robbin also seemed a little glassy eyed but he wanted to make sure I said hello.

Hmm, another sound reason to be a well-mannered boy and leave a good impression. People have long memories.
I'll check my log book, but if it was Powell River that had to be 1996, and he and his family were from Walla Walla. He worked at the penitentiary. He mailed me a nice photo of Bambina off Texada Island. |
