This is not my adventure, I found it doing research on doing the Loop in C-Dory.

Reading the comments made me smile as I have done a lot of boating along the rivers Indiana and Kentucky.

Thought it was worth sharing with the C-Brats.

This site is a gold mine on anything C-Dory, no matter what nugget you're looking for. Just curious, did you find this site hard to find in doing your research?

I didn't read the whole thing, but my impression is he is a somewhat novice solo boater in a new(?) 23 or at least with a new engine that required a 25 hour 'break in' oil change while en route on this adventure. (advice?).

When he blogged about his inability to fill water or gas tanks without 'burping', a bunch of us would have replied, 'it's your vent hose plumbing, here's what to look for and how to fix it.'

Same for his rookie problems with his E-suite. He managed to talk to a real Garmin support tech on New Years Eve, which is more than I can ever hope to accomplish in this life, and I will readily admit it. But many of us could have helped him out with his transducer issue without involving Garmin tech support. Including DO the software update even on a new device just like the instructions say (ESPECIALLY on a new device).

I readily admit my prejudices re how good planning leads to a good cruise. And how taking advantage of great advice is good (esp if it is free, and comes from captains with infinitely more experience than I will ever have).

What's not to like about this situation?

Happy boating to everyone, regardless of their choices,
John

Certainly interesting reading. He choose an unusual time of the year to start the Loop...Dec 31. When I look at accounts of the loop, I look to see how boaters integrate with the towns they pass thru. There are not a lot of clues here, but he does pick up a lot of the local flavor. I also look to see what they see along the way in parts where I am very familiar with the features. The only mentions of the Gulf Coast, were when he went to a Pensacola Little Theater play, 25 January, when he saw a performance of "The Cemetery Club". His travels were certainly impacted by the devastation of Hurricane Michael, and he visited the Apalachicola Maritime Museum, before following the big bend around.

Maybe some of us will met him some day?

He started on the back half of the loop. Seems to have worked it out to be in the south during the northern winter and in the far north for the spring and summer. It seems like a lot of Loopers start in the south (i.e. FL) in the spring.

I agree with John, He could have had a much better experience if he had spent some time on C-BRATS site before he loosed the lines for the loop. Also, I'd sure be interested in the phone number he had for that Garmin call on NY Eve.

To his credit he is an interesting writer and did turn some good photos.

Hi All,

I don't think he was a brat but he was he could have saved a lot of worry and hardship. I found the story searching C-Dory Loop.

I agree that good planning leads to good cruising. And even then there can be issues. Also having the luxury of time an not being in a hurry if there are issues make things easier.

Donnie, There is a fairly recent Great Loop Blog done by Pat and Patty Anderson on there trip around. Took about 8 months, and Pat wrote almost every day. Here is the link to the last entry. You can find the rest from there.

https://daydreamsloop.blogspot.com/

If you are looking at doing the trip, be sure and go through their blog.
