We got a good sized octipus in one of our pots--scared Marie, when it clamped on her boot. I was laughing hard, trying to find the camera.

I get lots of those big starfish. You see all that red in the pot and think you've hit the motherload of shrimp.

Never had one of those beauties in my shrimp pots but I've pull a couple pots with a little YERF in them with shrimp still coming out of their mouths! One time, I tossed the little shrimp stealer back in and was working on one of the pots when I heard a whoosh and little splash. I looked up to see a bald eagle who had just nabbed that little golden nugget off the surface of the water and then took it up into a tree by the waters edge for some fish nuggets! Where the eagle came from and how long he had been watching me, the Lord knows! Didn't take him long to pounce on the easy meal though.

What kind of bait were you using in your pots to attract such a beast as that starfish??

I have had those big sun stars in my crab pots in Canada and they chase the crabs out fast. I think the crabs exit over the sun star when the star holds the door open to enter.

I've not had one of those nasty things inside the pots yet, but they will hang on to bait when I'm bottom fishing.

Those big stars are pretty talented to fit their bulk through the little entrance in a shrimp pot. The most common bycatch I get are greenling, I wish I got more octopus.
