Good but cautionary news: the 16 foot cruiser, Scout, was recovered yesterday in Seattle, within a mile of where she was stolen.
She'd been stripped of: 40 hp and 5 hp Hondas, controls, radio, battery, gas tanks, transducers, tools, license plate, and much more. Hull and trailor seem OK.
Scout was spotted by a friend on his way to work. The kind of coincidence that happens all the time in Seattle.
This was a planned job, obviously. Other boat dealers in Seattle (Ballard) have also been hit lately.
Take care and stay safe. Our plan now is to lock her up with triple-B chain and a HUGE lock that makes Scout look even more like a toy. And store her for long periods with a wheel off the trailor.

Glad to hear your boats back. Sounds like you'll need some new gear but with any luck someone will still get the scum bags if they try to sell the stuff. While I'd hate to loose a motor or other equipment, the hull or boat is what we really named when we got the Lynn Marie so the important connection one has with their boat is home where it belongs.

Whew - good news indeed that the boat was recovered...We have a Gorilla tongue lock on Daydream's trailer, but I am still reluctant to leave it in the driveway at Birch Bay, and this just convinces me even more that it is worth hauling it back and forth. It may be a false sense of security, but I feel a lot safer having her here in our somewhat out of the way driveway in Fall City...we are getting a pad poured pretty soon so it can sit down below the house, out of sight even from our off-the-beaten-path road (to get to our house, you turn left on "Dead End," turn left again on "No Outlet," and a final left on "End maintained county road" - still, we get the odd slow cruiser through the neighborhood...)

Unfortantely, thieves cruise both neighborhooods and the internet to locate loot and boats.

Migael, I'm glad you found Scout, and I hope she stays safely with you for many years. I'll look for you while you're exploring bays and coves on the sound, like that time last year near Rich Passage.

well i'm glad to hear you got the boat back, Ras has brought up a good point you don't know who is looking on the net. i have scrolled my drivers licence number on most of my stuff right out front so it is seen ... suppose to deter people from stealing it .. who knows... it is getting were you don't want your licence number know also ... lol

Thats great news about recovering your boat. I can't hardly imagine how I would feel should it have happened to me. I'm still upset about the tool box that was stolen from me in 1974.

I have read quite a bit about outboard motor theft in our region over the past few years. The police should be able to expand on my understanding that there is an organized ring focused on outboard motor thefts. Apparently, they sell these motors out of the country. Locks, chains, inscriptions, garage doors, dogs, neighbors, etc. don't stop them, period. If this is the case, had they not been able to drive away with your boat, they still would have stole the motors. Likely, your friend found the boat because they were finished with it.

If I was a betting man, I would wager that you will have another occurance within six months should you choose to store your boat in the same location. Best of luck dealing with your insurance company and thanks for posting your notice so we can all be aware. Tim

Hi, M & B,

Glad you got her back, but the loss of all the main "stuff" is huge.

How do you make out on your insurance? As much as you folks lost, I hope you were well covered, and have a co-operative insurance company.

This stuff can get pretty dicey, so we hope you can come thru it OK.

just following the post here ... True Story is correct about coming back in six months .... out here if they break in to a home etc. it is quite common to get hit again when the insurance has replaced everthing ... 3 to 6 months ... sure is hard to keep ahead .. bye for now... wc

Very glad to hear that Scout was recovered. It made me realize that if the same happened to the Mary Ellen I would have to search to find all the information needed. It prompled me to go out this morning and get the ID numbers for the boat, motors and trailer so it would be available quickly for recovery by the police.
