We arrived at MDR earlier that we planned. Got launched and into a slip (H106) at Chace Park by noon. Mike (Sealife) came in about 1:30 and is in the slip next to us. Don't know who else is coming here, but expect Pounder and Dinner Belle II later today.
Swanny, We will see you at Two Harbors. We will try to save some wine.

Posting from the patio at Two Harbors.
We arrived yesterday at around noon. Had a nice cruise down from Channel Islands Harbor- SEA3PO and Fishtales. It is a 57nm trip- around mile 40 we ran into a fog bank with ~150' vis. The radar works great.
Sam and Kerry (Salty C's) met us as we arrived.
We are expecting 5 boats to arrive from MDR in a couple of hours.
We are officially on "island time" _________________ Roger

Having a blast at Catalina!
Dora Jean, Dinner Belle II, Discovery, Islander, Pounder, L'il Rascal, Salty C's, SEA3PO and Fishtales on the line.
Eight of us on Dora Jean and Discovery went over to San Clemente Island for fishing- caught a load of ocean whitefish, blue perch and sheephead.
Just relaxing on "Island Time" with a glass of buffalo milk.
I'll let Dixie tell about her four boat escort away from USN San Clemente Island

We had the fish fry last night- we had more then enough fish.
Tim and a couple friends from Catalina Yacht Anchorage Sales arrived yesterday. Tim joined us for dinner- yes he contributed fish that he speared after he got here.
Most of the fish were on the BBQ and Brent & Dixie fried some with a mixture of Aunt Jemima and Cajun seasoning-- good. (Joel said it must have been good since no one got sick)
Everyone received a C-Dory vest from CYA (no Dixie, CYA is not "cover your a$$).
PJ said since we are all delinquents, CYA was for "California Youth Authority.
Right now we are sitting on the patio sipping coffee while we wait for the showers to be cleaned- boy is this table odorefous (except for Joel- he made it in before they were closed) |

Brent and Dixie (especially Dixie) take the honours for THE EVENT of this get-together. I will elaborate over what Roger said about the fishing 'excursions' at San Clemente island, Dixie will have to fill in more details when they get a chance. None of us had ever been to this Navy controlled island, all prior years had announced operations around the island making it off limits.
From prior research we could fish the NW corner on down Eastward on the North side of the island (sounds confusing, but quite simple once you see the 25 mile long or so island). So we (Dora Jean) arrived at the NW corner, we noticed Discovery went a little beyond this corner -- more on the West end of the island. That's about the time Brent said over the VHF, "Did you hear that on Chan 16?". No, I said, didn't break squelch for me. He said we're (Discovery) in an restricted area, must leave now. So, they came over by us and we proceeded to fish and dance with the kelp a bit TOO close -- tangles to deal with.
After catching a few small fish and several juvenile sheepheads that had to be put back, we decided to move further down the island. Found another nice spot, we anchored due to the current and wind pushing us around too much. Discovery anchored further down. Started catching GREAT fish, much larger, getting hits seconds after getting the lines down. Then the red lights and sirens up on the hill and over the radio saying we were in a restricted area, need to move 1 1/2 miles offshore. We acknowledged and finished pulling in the rods (with fish on -- we had enough by then for the fish fry!).
We weighed anchor and proceeded out of the area. Discovery tried to weigh their anchor but found it had 'captured' an old cable thru an eye ring, right in the center, the whole anchor thru it! The US Navy came over in their very red rafts (4 of them), meant business, stood off and watched Discovery as they 'messed' with their property, not to get too close in case it was undetinated explosives or something. Discovery finally got it unhooked with much strain and effort, then proceeded away from the area. The 4 rafts with 2-4 persons each on board then 'escorted' Discovery out past the zone, 1 1/2 miles. We had killed our engines and proceeded to clean fish as we watched them CLOSELY escorting Discovery. We were so mesmerized with the whole thing all of us forgot to snap a picture ... darn.
When we asked Dixie what happened, she said "She's be kicked out of many areas in her life, but never 'escorted' out, and...by the United States Navy!". It was a sight to behold, they (the Navy) had no idea who they were messing with!!! Jim (Wild Blue), we so wished you were around for this... _________________ Steve & Carmen

We would have loved to have been a part of this, Steve - we'll look forward to a Catalina adventure in the future. We'll see Brent and Dixie in a couple weeks and will get her perspective on this. We heard about it on the phone, but seeing the twinkle in Dixie's eyes and Brent shaking his head will add to the story. Let this situation show that we are not a bad influence on those two... they can get in plenty of hot water all on their own.
No one went away in irons. Sounds like you folks had a great time!
Best wishes,
Jim _________________ Jim & Joan

Just spent the better part of an hour trying to upload pictures 5 at a time, then 3 at a time, and lastly 1 at a time. No luck, no pictures made it. I'm using the same camera and medium resolution (~300kB) that I've used for 3 yrs. I noticed same problem a few months ago trying to upload pics of the Delta trip. I'll try again this evening, oh well... |

I want to thank Tim of Catalina Yacht Anchorage for the dinner Friday night. Tim, it was nice to meet you and your friends.
Fueled the boat today- 115 nm, 8.2 hours, average 13.5 knots and used 38 gals gas. Towed the dink both ways.
Talked with Mike (Sealife), he saw us passing Hueneme Port as we returned to Channel Islands Harbor. Should have been there Mike, no one was there to organize the ginghy race like you. Looks like your back was fine after all, eh.
Want to thank Mike (Sealife) for the tri tip at Tuesday nights beach bbq

I totally agree.... CYA really outdid themselves with that dinner... I would sure hate to see that bill on my mastercard... yipes... but it gave me incentive to send them any prospective buyers....I am impressed by a dealership that takes such good care of their owners group... They did a First Class Job... Thanks CYA
Got home with Fishtales Sat afternoon.... washed and cleaned the boat... put everything away.... Now I am packing for my new adventure !!!
In the morning I am flying to Cheyenne to pick up another BMW motorcycle...a 1976 R90/6 and going camping... should be gone three or four weeks....ending up in Northern California... staying there until the Santa Barbara Cruise and riding home for that....sure wouldn't want to miss that good feast..

Discovery made her way back to Utah with no mishaps after another wonderful C-Brat adventure. There couldn't be a nicer group of people to spend a week in Catalina--or anywhere else--with. We appreciated the kindness you all showed our grandson Cody. For a 15 year old boy from Wayne County, this was quite a trip. It was good for him to see that internet friends are not always weird, and that his Granny probably is as crazy as Jim (Wild Blue) makes me out to be. But along those lines I do need to say that it was not my fault that we got escorted away from that island by the Navy--even though I was driving. John (Dinner Belle II) said that the cable we hooked on to was probably hooked to Jimmy Hoffa and that's why they wanted us out of there. Sounds logical to me. Also, it was not my fault that we got kick out of the underwater preserve by the USC guy while we were snorkeling. It must have been Roger's fault.
We wanted to give a special thanks to Tim Braun from Catalina Yacht A----. I can't remember the last word but I do know what CYA means. He really put forth the effort to make the trip great for us and we appreciate his and the Factory's support. We will do our best to be good salesman for them. We love our boat!!! We may not be the yachty type but we are really fun people. We enjoyed meeting the other Tim and Bill too. Great guys.
We posted some pix. Hope you all can tell what a good time we had. More C-Brats should do this trip next year.
Thanks again everyone, and can't wait to see you all again soon. |
