For the holidays we flew to Sacramento and drove back to Seattle. We choice to tae the coast road most of the way so we could see my brother in Coo's bay. One the first night we stopped in Trinidad Ca. and spent the night at Trinidad head beach. There is no camping at the beach but we will never tell. We got in after dark and decided to go for a walk on the fishing pier. James yells out that he spotted a fish in the light of the pier. At first I did not believe him. Large fish just do not hang out on the surface. I figured a sea bird of some sort. I caught up with James and looked over the rail in time to see a giant squid. well probably a Humboldt squid. they are a deep water species that are caught by halibut and rock cod fisherman once in a while. The squid was about 4 ft long and bigger around then my leg, which ain’t saying much. The top of the head ,were the arrow shaped fins are, was two ft across. I never thought I would see one just swimming around on the surface like that. It just kept coming back to the light. we watched it swim around for 10 mins. it was very cold and windy that night. The mornings paper reported the winds had reached 60 mph and at least one boat had sunk down in Eureka. It was a truly once in a life time spotting. _________________ Thomas J Elliott

The Humboldt squid are a targeted species for us tuna fishermen on the Northern Ca. coast. They are extremely tasty and fun to catch. Recently there have been carcass' found on the beach. Finding them on the beach or close to shore is pretty rare. I hope you had a good time in Humboldt county, It's a beautiful area.
The boat that sunk was a very old com'l fishing boat that hadn't moved from its mooring for years. No oil/diesel spill was noted however they did place booms around the craft.

This morning I shot a squid in my pajamas. How it got into my pajamas I’ll never know…
With apologies to Groucho Marx. |

When I read this I was shocked, simply shocked. But then I saw you're from Bozeman...
Um, Livingston born & bred myself, couldn't resist the jab.
Where you planning on using the C-Dory? Flathead, Yellowstone, or farther afield? |

Back to the Humboldt Squid. It's quite a predator, not many sea creatures are safe from it, just the BIG ones. The guys that go diving among them wear fiberglass armor and use teathers to keep from being dragged away! |

We plan upon using our boat in the Sound, mostly. We feel it will be more fun than a townhouse in Seattle. And we can easily take it East to play in the Bahamas, too
With any luck we will even see a squid in sleepware!
