Ok so which Washington permits should we get?

There is a State Park Camping Permit-says it covers Launch fee, but not moorage?

Or a Launch Permit doesn't cover parking(camping) or a Moorage Permit? Doesn't cover launching or camping(parking).

I just turned 50 and now confused.

Jim, it looks like you would need the camping permit to launch and park...Cha-Ching......and the moorage permit to tie up...Cha-Ching.........how often do you launch at a state park? If you buy a fishing license you get a parking sticker that is good at WDFW facilities (but not valid at Pate Starks).....if you're hauling triples you may need more permits Smile

Yes, somebody who knows the drill here, please set us straight! We use the state parks and want a permit for launch/parking and mooring - is this one permit or multiple permits? We will of course figure out if multiple permits if necessary would end up being more expensive than just doing the "pay as you go" system, but I can't really believe that...So who has got these permits before, and what should we get?

OK, I did a quick run though the Washington State Parks permit site. Here is what I THINK the deal is:

1. An annual day parking permit cost $50 and covers boat launch and DAY USE parking. It does NOT cover overnight parking. At $5 per launch, you would have to launch at a state park 10 times to recover cost.

2. An annual mooring permit costs $60, and covers tying up at the dock or mooring buoy and nothing more. At $7 per night, you would have to moor about 9 times to recover cost.

3. There is a SEPARATE $10 per night "unattended vehicle fee." There is no annual permit that covers this.

4. Paying a nightly camping fee covers overnight parking and launch, but there is no ANNUAL "camping" permit, or at least none that I could see on the Washington State Parks online permit site.

So, unless somebody else who really knows what the deal is can say otherwise, it seems for us that the "pay as you go" system is still the best. That would be different IF there were some annual permit that also covered overnight parking, but it sure doesn't appear that way...

OK, I just spoke with Joyce at Washington State Parks (360-902-8844), who confirmed that there is NO annual permit that covers the overnight unattended vehicle fee. I think we should all flood them with this question and ask "Why the heck not??"

OK, last one this morning, I promise! Here is the text of an email that I just sent to Washignton State Parks Director Rex Derr (rex.derr@parks.wa.gov):

Director Derr:

I have been looking at the Washington State Parks online annual permit system, and it appears that there is one significant annual permit that the State Parks system does not offer. This is the overnight unattended vehicle parking permit.

Typically, we will launch a trailerable boat at a mainland state park (annual permit, $50) and moor at a marine state park for one or more nights (annual permit, $60). As confirmed by Joyce at the State Parks (360-902-8844), it is still necessary to pay a separate $10 per night overnight unattended vehicle parking fee at the park, and no annual permit is available that covers this.

The lack of an annual permit for overnight unattended vehicle parking defeats the attractiveness of buying the other annual permits for a signficant number of us trailer boaters who use marine state parks. We are fully in support of a fee based system for users of the parks, but the system should be comprehensive and logical, such that buying annual permits eliminates the need to pay any separate daily fee.

I believe tying up at the dock used to be $8, but not long ago was raised to $10 a night. Sixty dollars for a season pass sounds like a deal. Right, (said) Fred?

Yes, that is correct, not sure where I plucked the $60 annual fee figure...maybe that is a minimum, not sure. Here are a couple of cut-and-pastes from the Washington State Parks site:

Overnight dock moorage
50 cents per foot ($10 minimum)

Annual Watercraft Moorage Permit
If you moor at docks in fee areas more than seven nights each year, an annual Watercraft Moorage Permit will save you money. Valid Jan. 1 through Dec. 31.
Annual Moorage Permit $3.50 per foot ($50 minimum) Allows moorage at all state park moorage sites. Valid Jan. 1 through Dec. 31.

So a 22' is $11 per day, or $77 for the annual permit, which calculates to (duh) 7 nights to recoup the annual fee, like it says.
