During shrimp season the puller never comes off. it is not that obtrusive to just leave it on. our season for shrimp is so short .you definatly need to be careful when using the gas powerd unit. it is quite positive and if you have any stray rope ends where you go from nylon to lead line, they have a tendency to get caught on the capstan and then it want to wrap. you almost need two people for safety. one with his hand on the kill switch tostop motor when mishaps occur.a remote switch could be set up so that you could hit it with your knee or another part of your body.
it is a fast way to pull 3 or 4 hundred feet of line in a couple of minutes.
we use an old hose reel that leeked and we store all the line on it . is a very easy way to handle the rope when it is time to haul out and head for the barn.
where we do most of our spotted shrimp fishing, it is about 300 ft deep. we have 300 ft of 1/4 yellow nylon and 50 to 75 feet of 1/4 lead line.the lead line is at the bouy end and sinks , no floating, then we have1 bouy connected to rope and a tag bouy with 20 ft of lead line as the second with a flag attached for better visibility.
I would say that the gas powered pot puller works well. I would not have it any other way.,well, maybe hydraulics. I like hydraulics.
