This is just a quick reminder to all members, especially those who have recently joined, that anyone can get a personal photo album, named for their C-Dory. All you need to do is request one, and Bill (Da Nag) or Mike (TyBoo) will fix you right up. We'll even add a link to the album in your profile information that is included when you post a message.

So, please, if you have pictures you want to share, just let us know so we can make it easy to do. We love pictures!

Thanks,

Mike

Mike, can you or anyone else offer some advice to us technologically-challenged individuals on generating good quality pics from a 35 mm (i.e. - not digital) camera? We generally shoot print film, but the couple I've scanned and saved digitally don't offer the clarity that they should. If I could figure this out, I might have a few pics to share.

Moose,

You've just encountered one of the main reasons folks like digital so much; doing a little research on the Internet will yield tons of different opinions on how to properly scan a photo. Add to that, there are a bazillion variables; picture qulaity, print size, scanning and image manipulation software, etc.

Here's what I'd suggest - pick up a copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements. It's relatively cheap (Walmart sells it online for under $60), and will handle all of your scanning and photo manipulation needs. Many folks here use it, and are familiar with it. Also, it's not a waste of money if you end up with a digital camera; I use it for quick touch-ups on digital images as well as my scans.

If you want to go this route, post back once you have it installed, and I'll follow up with how I use it to scan and upload photos.

If you want to stick with what you have, here are a few generic rules of thumb I use for scanning photos for uploading to our Photo Gallery:

- Scan at 300dpi

- Do not resize photos either while scanning, or after you have the digital image. Scanning software usually refers to this as "scaling".

- If your scanning software supports it, save the scanned file as JPEG.

Good luck.

Excellent. Thanks for the response. I'll look forward to more discussions once we get it installed.

Al,
Provided you take good quality pics with your 35mm to begin with Wink , another option may be to have digital copies made at the same time you have prints made. Most photo shops have this capability now, and its pretty cheap. You just get a disk back with your prints. Pop it in your disk drive at home and you're ready to upload.

Or you can take either your prints or your negatives to a photo shop and have them make a digital copy. This usually costs a little more per picture than having it done with your regular developing. But this way, you only have to do the ones you want to upload, so it may be cheaper overall.

The advantage to having the photo shop do it is that they typically have much better equipment for digitizing photos than most households. Thus, the digipics come out looking better.

Good luck Thumbs Up

Moose -

Before we got a halfway decent digital, we would have our 35mm film developed at a place that would give us a CD along with the prints. I think it costs about four bucks extra for a 36 exp. roll. They do a real good job with the pics. We still do that for a lot of the pictures, because the 35mm has so much more flexibility for scenic shots. It is simple, quick, well done, and the pics files are JPEG and can be simply copied.

There you go, Doug. If I did it right, the link to your new album should appear to the left with the other important stuff each time you post a message.

Thanks for askin', and thanks in advance for the pictures!

And you bet on the next meeting - Boats for sure! It was nice getting to talk with you for the short time I did. See you again soon.

Yep, old Jr. Nerd got 'er done! The Liberty Call album is listed right where it should be. You can also find it on listed alphabetically on the Our C-Dory Albums list anytime you want. The best way to find it quick, though, is to post pictures to it frequently so it is always listed on the Recent Photo Activity list on the front page!

On a related note...I only discovered this a few weeks ago, and keep forgetting to post a note about it.

The Photo Albums have their own search feature - just click on the Photo Albums link at the top of every page. On the main Photo Album page is a search field in the upper right corner - just enter some text and hit enter. It queries album names, photo names, and any of the text descriptions entered for the photos.

This is how I now find individual albums now - e.g. enter "Tyboo", hit enter, and Mike's album appears in the search results. You can enter partial text as well, for example "nag" will bring up my album in the results, as well as a number of photos with my boat name in the description.

You're set to go, Ron - link is under your profile info in all your posts.

Also - if you want to update your profile with your vessel info (model, year, etc.), that will appear with your posts, as well as in the "Our C-Dorys" list.

Thanks!
